Not able to manually merge transactions in investing account

Using Quicken Classic Deluxe on Windows.
I have paycheck transactions in my Banking/Checking account, a portion of which is transferred, with a matching employer deposit amount, into an investing account. I was also able to download .qfx files to import from my retirement account holder and used these to download the transactions into Quicken.

Now, my investing account shows four transactions, two for the paycheck deposits through checking, and two for the downloaded transactions. The former two have the Pencil icon, showing they should be able to be merged into a downloaded transaction. Right-clicking on this icon does not show the submenu to "Match to downloaded transaction", but the standard editing submenu.

How do I match these transactions?

If you have accepted the downloaded transactions so that you now have duplicate transactions in your register, you should be able to delete the duplicates.

I can't delete the duplicates that are from the paycheck, as they are part of a paycheck split and would leave an unreconcilable hole in those transactions.

I can't delete the duplicates that are the downloaded transactions, because they have much more information in them than the simple amount. Deleting them would lose this information, throwing off the utility of the investment type account, making it much more like a banking type account.

    They need to be merged.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your original post.

The transactions from the Paycheck should be transfers (XIn) transactions that add to the cash balance of the investing account. Presumably the transactions from the broker include Bought transactions that use the cash to purchase securities, reducing the cash balance. If they are BoughtX transactions, you should edit them to select "From this account's cash balance" as the cash source for the transaction. These do not need to be merged and are not duplicates, they complement the paycheck transactions.

If this does not explain what you are seeing, please provide examples of the transactions, we can help sort them out.
