All Vanguard Accts Out of Balance

All 7 Vanguard accts that I manage have gotten out of balance… within the last 3 months I believe. It appears to be caused by the way VG handles settlement accts (using shares) Has something at VG and/or Quicken changed recently? It seems that all of the different transactions involved (when simply moving money to and from the settlement accts) do not download to Quicken. Any suggestions? I have gotten to the point where I really don't care too much about having all of the VG transaction details in Quicken. I think I would be happy if the balances would just stay correct and match the VG app. Suggestions/Tips?

Did your VG accounts get transitioned over to their brokerage side? Mine did last year. I had to change my accounts all around but I enter everything manually.

I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

Are you moving money between Vanguard accounts, to other accounts, or both?

Remember if you are moving money between Accounts there is nothing in the downloaded data that says what the other Quicken account is. When there is a transfer, it is best to enter it first, before downloading the corresponding transactions.

I suspect this is the sort of issue you are dealing with.

You can search this site for related posts going back more than a year without a good resolution I have seen. I have not moved to the Cash Plus program and am not having any problems (knocks on wood).

    @Brad95X

I see you have a separate post about a Cash Plus account. Is that the same issue as we are discussing here, or a separate issue?

Yes 5 accts were transitioned from mutual fund only accts to brokerage accts. The other 2 accts were opened more recently and were originally opened as brokerage accts. I'm having trouble with all 7 accts. It seems that only some(not all) of the transactions are downloading, especially transactions regarding VMFXX settlement accts and Cash Plus accts… the share balance and cash balance are often off on these types… I wish there was a way to keep the share balance from downloading but still allow the cash balance to DL (for VMFXX & Cash Plus accts)

@Jim_Harman sometimes I am moving money between accts… but sometimes I'm just moving money within the same acct(from the settlement acct to buy stock in the same acct) I think all of the transactions for settlement accts and/or Cash Plus accts are not downloading consistently but not certain. Is there a way to eliminate the share balance transactions from downloading in the VMFXX and Cash Plus accts? It seems that rarely does the share balance match the cash balance as it should in these types of accts

It's a slightly different issue but probably the same cause. This post was written primarily in regard to VG brokerage accts that have a VMFXX settlement acct… the other post was written about the VG Cash Plus acct. I believe the root issue for both acct problems is that VG and Q have not worked together to resolve consistent downloading and classification of the transactions related to both VMFXX & Cash Plus accts

@q_lurker are your accts mutual fund only accts? My problems seem to have started when I transitioned from mutual fund only accts to brokerage accts back in 5/2023. Vanguard told me I would have to transition eventually, so I just went ahead and did it.

@Jim_Harman I see in my email this question from you "@Brad95X are one or more of your accounts a Vanguard Cash Plus account, or are these brokerage accounts, our are they the old mutual fund only accounts, which …" One acct is a VG Cas Plus acct, the other 6 are brokerage accts (5 of which were originally the old mutual funds only(MFO) accts) I transitioned all MFO accts to brokerage accts back on 5/2023. It seems like that is when my reconciliation problems began. BUT I have also been trading more actively since transitioning to the brokerage accts also. Is there a simpler way to keep the VG brokerage accts reconciled on Q? Or would Q's simplified tracking option be worth a try?

Cash Plus is a different type of account and has its own problems. Let's focus on the brokerage accounts.

Also terminology: VMFXX is the settlement fund in a brokerage account, not an account by itself.

If you want to track performance and cost basis, you can't use Simple mode because the detailed transactions are no longer downloaded.

When you buy a stock or ETF you should see a Bought transaction for the security leading to a negative cash balance then a couple of days later a Sold for the settlement fund bringing the cash balance back to zero. The opposite happens when you sell.

If there are no open trades the cash balance should be zero and all the cash should be in the settlement fund. Does this match what you are seeing?

@q_lurker are your accts mutual fund only accts?

I had both account types ( MF and brokerage) until December. At that time I completed the transition process to all Vanguard Brokerage accounts. While a few nits to pick overall, I have not had any real Quicken problems with the new accounts.

I had both account types ( MF and brokerage) until May 2023. At that time I completed the transition process to all Vanguard Brokerage accounts. Are you using Quicken Windows Premier subscription? I just switched over from the Q Win Deluxe subscription in March 2024 I believe. Wondering if that might have anything to do with the problem…? I believe that all VG transactions are not being downloaded, only some of the transactions.

There should be no difference in how transactions are handled between Deluxe and Premier.

Can you explain what is out of balance in your accounts? If you click on the gear at the top right of an account and select Reconcile shares, does it show the Security Comparison Mismatch, or is it just the cash that is out of balance?

@Jim_Harman sorry for the slow replies I am learning and trying different things as we discuss. I just did the Security Comparison Mismatch and apparently VG isn't even reporting some security shares at the moment. Some security shares are out of balance, VMFXX shares are out of balance and cash is out of balance. See pic… I still have those Apple & MS stocks but 0.000 being reported? I have been seeing this for a few days. My Schwab acct always balances to the penny, although I must admit I trade less on it… but this really makes VG much less appealing to me. The NVDA split did not work right on Quicken either in my VG accts. Not sure who is to blame there but I believe it to be VG handling things (for Quicken) differently than other brokerages.

I have been receiving hugely different balances from my accounts in TIAA. The issue has been escalated since April and still incorrect.

Is it possible that you are still downloading from your old classic brokerage account instead of the new brokerage account? That is the missing securities are in a new brokerage account that you are not downloading from?

@Bob_L no sir, I just now doublechecked the acct numbers and they are all the new brokerage acct numbers… I never had these stocks in the old accts either… the old accts were mutual fund only accts I believe… and these are stocks , not mutual funds. I appreciate your help and suggestion
