Help! im seeing strange behavior when I try to verify that Quicken is accurately showing me my E-trade account.

  1. I ported from Quicken for Windows to Mac in April 2024

2. I seem to have selected the "detailed" method of tracking

3. when I look at the dashboard, Q is saying I have about 40% more $$$ than E-trade website shows. many of the holdings shown in quicken are not in my portfolio. they have have been things I had years ago. it shows many 'negative quantity' shares. but im not currently shorting anything

4. Quicken shows that it was last updated today. so that is not the problem

5. when I click on the transactions tab… it doesn't show any transactions later than august of 2023

where do I Start trying to troubleshoot this weird behavior!?!

@mikestone No, changing to Simple doesn't actually get rid of the transaction information, it just hides it from you. If you change from Detailed to Simple & then later go back to Detailed, all the transactions are still there in the register.

However, it will add additional transactions to add or remove shares as needed to force your account holdings to match what's being reported by the bank at that time. So it fixes the overall account holdings as of the day you switch to Simple but it won't fix any historical inaccuracies.

That's what I observed this afternoon playing around with a copy of my Quicken file.

I see that @Jon did the work of verifying this for Quicken Mac, and it is as I stated/guessed in your other thread.

After converting to the Mac, did your Quicken account register convert correctly? Did it ever match reality, cash balance, share holdings, etc.?

I think you need to compare your Mac register transactions to the transactions you had in the Windows version and resolve any discrepancies.

Before you do that … is your Mac register properly sorted by Date, either in ascending sequence (oldest transaction at the top of the register) or in descending sequence (newest transaction at the bottom of the register)? Click the Date column header to toggle sort orders.

If you can still run Quicken Windows then you should do what @UKR suggests & do a side-by-side comparison of your Quicken Windows data with your Quicken Mac data.

If you no longer have your Windows system and can't look at your Quicken Windows data anymore then I would start comparing Quicken Mac to your monthly or yearly statements. One thing that will help with that is if you select an account and look at the portfolio display, you can view the account as of a specific date and it will show the holdings and account value on that day. If you set the date to the ending date of your statement, you can easily see whether your Quicken data was correct as of that date.

Start with the oldest statements first and work your way forward. If the account has been open for many years, start by checking the year end statements first; once you've figured out which year has a problem you can start narrowing it down by quarter or month within that year.

For The comparison that @UKR suggested I would take the top down approach, and frankly it really should have been done Right after you converted from Windows. In other words you first check that all the accounts have the right balances and if they don't you work down from there. Also because investment accounts are dependent not only the cash in the account but how many shares you have in each security The first thing to check is to make sure that the number of shares in each security is correct. This will at least point you at the right direction to get the current balances to be correct. Once you start pinpointing a problem then that's when you start looking at the individual transactions and see what was went wrong.

thanks all. i will try your suggestions…but quick question.. (kind of building off of another Q I posed in the forum that some of us already chatting on)…. if I switch the method from "complete to simple" for my e-trade account .. will these problems kind of 'go away', ie Q will then show the actual shares of stocks and Actual cash i have as per Etrade account today?

once I click on simple method… will all the transactions already in my Q account get wiped out ? ie. its a one way trip, i cant then toggle back to complete method?

    thx
