What does "Sync" mean?

"Sync"can mean "backup" where one file overwrites the another version of the same file, usually the later version overwrites the earlier version. But it can also be the larger of the two overwriting the other. Or one overwriting the other only if certain qualifiers are met (e.g. not modified in the last ___ days).

It can also mean "mirror" where all files in a set totally overwrite another set of files, regardless size or date.

Suppose you write a check on Quicken Classic Desktop. Later, you add a memo or category to that check on Quicken Cloud. What happens when you sync? Suppose you enter something in cloud and sync, then you delete that entry on the desktop app. What happens when you re-sync?

To give a proper answer we need to know exactly where you are seeing "Sync", because Quicken uses it in a couple of different places for different things, and also some people use the term when it isn't called that at that spot in Quicken.

"Sync to Mobile/Web" means syncing the Quicken Desktop data file with the "Quicken Cloud Dataset" on the Quicken server (QCS/Quicken Connection Services).

Both the Mobile app and Web use the Quicken Cloud Dataset as where they read/store data. This is a two-way sync. Changes in the Quicken Desktop data file should be pushed to the Quicken Cloud Dataset, and changes made in the Mobile and Web apps should be pushed down to the Quicken Desktop data file on the next sync of the Quicken Desktop data file. And that includes all kind of changes like changing a transaction, deleting, adding them, and changing the budget, …

Thanks. I understand the two-way sync as you described it. But what happens when there's a collision, if a transaction is deleted on the desktop, but has been changed in the cloud? Does the changed transaction copy down to the desktop, or does the cloud's version get deleted?

@Billley I have no idea what would happen if there were a conflict. In theory the Quicken Desktop data file is the "master", and one would think it would "win", but I certainly haven't tested it, and Quicken Inc doesn't give any details like that.

That's what I hoped, that sycing is "Desktop Dominant." But it would be interesting to see if that's how it actually works every time. Quicken Inc must have anticipated that users would make changes in both places. Maybe it preserves both versons and you have ro re-clear or re-reconcle that transaction, manually merge them, or delete one. But, whatever, that's not how I want to use it. Tell me if you think this work, pretty simple:

I just want Cloud to be a one-way dumb backup drive. My fear was if I sync desktop to cloud something else would happen. If cloud ever syncs with the bank, that could create the collisions. But if I never initiate syncing cloud with bank I can avoid that possibility, right? It's not going to sync by it self.

What I can definitely tell you is that Quicken Cloud is NOT a backup for your data file. It is only a partial copy of your data file.

Here the official statement on what Quicken Cloud is:
