How to replace Security name for multiple transactions?

Hello,

I have 100 transactions with old, incorrect Security name, and another 120 transactions with correct Security name.

Nether of those have any Ticker, so nothing from online.

I need to replace all those old 100 transactions to get new Security name.

Or I need to merge those 2 sets of transactions to have single Security for all.

Manual Security name change is time consuming.

What's better way for it?

Gan you go to the Security List (TOOLS, Security List) and change each incorrect name to the correct name?

IF, the correct name is already present (i.e., you hold a particular security under both the wrong, and correct, names) you could do a 1:1 "Corporate Acquisition" of the wrong name by the correctly named security.

Be sure to take a backup before beginning any of this … just in case.

Click on Edit in the register (or Cntrl H). In the first window to the right of "Find" click the down arrow and select Payee. In the middle window, enter the payee name you want to change. To the right click "find" and a list will be generated. In the "Replace" window at the bottom left, select the down arrow and select "Payee." In the "with" window enter the new name for that payee. (For example, if you have 100 transactions with the incorrect security name of "Ajax Securities" and you want them named "Apex Securities" then enter "Apex Securities) Then select the "Replace All" button. All of the transactions in the generated list will then be named Apex Securities.

It's a fairly simple process but make a backup before you begin so you can restore the original register if you make a mistake

In my opinion, editing each investment transaction is the cleanest way to proceed - even if it involves editing 100 transactions one at a time.

My recommendation starts with making sure you have a reliable backup available - just in case something gets off track.

Then I would sort the investment account transactions list by security. That way all the transactions you want to edit are grouped together.

Next step is to edit the first of those transactions to the security name you want it to be. Copy that full name (usually Ctrl-C). Press Enter which should accept that and advance to the next transaction.

Click on the security name for that transaction. Paste over with the preferred name (usually Ctrl-V). Press Enter to accept the changed transaction and should advance you to the next transaction.

Repeat the click on security name, Ctrl-V paste, Enter as many times as needed.

While it may sound daunting edit 100 transactions, you will likely be surprised how quickly it can be done.

thank you for the reply, but the Replace (Ctrl-H) doesn't work for Investment type, only Find works, but results in to expected 100 transactions, that I can't change in a batch, but must edit one by one.

yes, I have done this way for other 10 - 30 transactions for other accounts and Securities and got tired

now I found about 110 transactions that also need Security to be renamed per transaction, so I asked for any automation or batch processing to replace Security name, while keep all per transaction as is.

Looks like I have to do manual one by one transaction Edit …

unless there is a better option?

This is easy to execute, but will not preserve required performance Security data for reports IMHO

A name change WILL preserve investment performance info. And, is the incorrect name supposed to be a security that you also hold?

You've never quite explained what the incorrect name actually is, and what it's supposed to be. An example would be helpful.

Also, any idea how the incorrect name came to be?

I had 2 sets of transactions

Security A 100 transactions - incorrect name

Security B 120 transactions - correct name

All transactions with Security A have to be replaced to use Security B name.

Just rename existing Security isn't possible due to Security B already exists, the same to change Corporate name.

I went via manual Edit each transaction for past 30 min or so to change the Security name to B for all former A.

An account has this security for past 5 years, some went with one name and some with another upon Import, that was done 2-4 times per year.

Since A & B are supposed to be the same … why can't you do a 1 for 1 corporate acquisition of A by B?

Currently, to get accurate performance numbers for "the company", you need to include both A & B.

All that a CorpAcq will do is merge them. The purchase dates, purchase quantities and purchase price won't change … thus "performance" won't change.
