I take it that you're saying that the Opening Balance when you start a reconciliation isn't the Ending Balance you came to on the previous reconciliation?

As you probably know, that Opening Balance is calculated on the fly when you begin a reconciliation as the sum of all transactions that have an "R" in the CLR column. Accordingly, if any prior period transaction with that "R" somehow gets changed - dollar amount or CLR status - that Opening Balance will be incorrect.

It's not clear here how that change - an "R" on a prior period transaction getting changed? - is happening, but it can be due to user error. I'm not saying that's the situation here since you've not given any indication as to why you think that change has occurred, but assuming for the moment that it is user error then making sure certain Preferences are in place can help.

Under Edit > Preferences... click on Alerts & Messages, click on Warnings, then click on the Reset Quicken Warnings button. Then go to Notify and make sure the box in front of "Before changing reconciled transactions" is checked. (As a practical matter I think that having all items on that list checked is generally the safest approach.)

Another thing to do to help protect all prior period transactions from any change is click on File > Set Password to modify transactions... and then create a very simple password and entering a date in the "Required For Dates Through" box where you want to be asked by Quicken if you really want to modify or change a prior period transaction. I typically use the prior month end here. You can still make changes of course, this just slows you down enough to make you reflect on whether you really want to make that change, or not.
