American Express - two accounts
I have both a savings and a checking account with American Express Banking. The checking account is new. Now Quicken can't "find" my savings account and instructs me to deactivate update. I tried re-adding. It only sees the checking. Also, if I try to import the downloaded file of transactions, I get the message that Quicken is unable to verify the financial institution.

I don't think I've ever seen Quicken instruct me to "deactivate update." Do you mean that during the account setup process you get a message to "Do not add" the account? If so, that means that the account was already connected and Quicken recognized that. It does not mean that the update should be canceled or deactivated.
The way to confirm the connection status of an account:
- In the Account Register just below the Account Name above the register on the left, if the account is connected it will show what the connection method is.
- On the Online Services tab of Account Details: It will say whether or not the account is connected and what the connection method is.
- In Account List it will show whether or not an account is connected and what the connection method is.
If you did deactivate the Savings account and cannot get it reconnected: Deactivate the Checking account and then do Tools > Add Account (not Set Up Now). When prompted, make sure you Link the downloads to the correct accounts in Quicken.
Also, if I try to import the downloaded file of transactions, I get the message that Quicken is unable to verify the financial institution.
This appears to be a different issue. I, too, have been getting this error downloading the QFX file from a different bank. And I've seen others posting the last couple of months that the Web Connect connection (manually downloading and importing the QFX file from the online account) does not appear to be working properly.

That is not what happened. It said it could not FIND the savings account (which was previously connected) and suggested that I deactivate the account from Update. I tried deactivating and then re-adding. Quicken simply can no longer see the savings account. It only sees the checking account. I've been using Quicken for at least 20 years and find that it is increasingly glitchy. I am just about over it.

OK, thanks for clarifying that point.
Did you try making sure that both your Checking and Savings accounts are deactivated and then try setting up the download connection? Some financial institutions do not permit simply adding one or more account connections when there is already one or more connections already established.
Another thing you could try: With both accounts deactivated, go to the General tab of Account details and remove all financial institution information (everything above the Contact Name field). Then try doing Add Account to set up the connection for them.
