Check numbers

The ability to easily increment to the next check number in a checking account by pressing the +key is a handy feature. In today's world, many checking account payments are made online. In this case a transaction number is frequently (always?) assigned by the merchant.

I use the check number field to store the merchant's transaction number. Transaction numbers are usually nine to twelve digits, while check numbers are usually four.

To keep the auto check increment intact, it would be nice if Quicken would ignore the longer transaction numbers and only recognize and increment the shorter check numbers.

Thanks for listening, Bill Seldon

As an alternative to using the Check# field, have you considered using either the Memo field or the Notes field for your transaction numbers?
You can easily add the Notes field to your register by clicking the Register Columns icon (next to the Balance column title).
If the Notes column appears to be too small, just widen it by dragging the vertical column separator in the column title.

Similarly, when I have the CC company withdraw their due from my checking account, I use their confirmation number in the bank’s check number column. Same for some others that pull from the account. In my case I am usually accepting a scheduled transaction.

Not similarly, I do not see this use interfering with the Next check or +1 check number progression.

As far as I know the check number incrementing feature works by remembering the last check number you entered into a transaction. It doesn’t work by scanning previous transactions. Therefore, the downloaded check numbers shouldn’t affect the incrementing check number feature unless you modified one of the downloaded check and then entered that transaction.

Building off @Chris_QPW comment, if I fill in the check number via an enter form for a scheduled bill reminder, that does not count (apparently) as entering a check number directly in the register.
