VaIidating causes some Report transaction detail for transfers to show zero amounts

I recently accepted the update to R59.35; I don't know if this issue was present in earlier versions.

In my working data file, I opened the built-in Itemized Category report and customized it to include just my taxable investing accounts, all other options are left at the defaults.

In the Transfers section of the report, the total transfer amounts are correct and if I click on the little graph to the left of the Category name, the graph shows the correct monthly amounts.

BUT if I click on the - sign to show the transaction detail for transfers to banking accounts, the amounts are all 0.00. If I double click on a transaction to show it in the Transaction List (register), the transaction is correct. Transfers to other investing accounts are shown correctly.

I validated my file and the result is the same. Hitting Ctrl-Z to recalculate the investing transactions also made no difference. Restarting Quicken made no difference. I see the problem with both the old and new report customization interfaces. The problem is also present on a test system using an older copy of my working file .

I tried to replicate this in a test file and initially I did not see the issue there. I Validated the test file and after validating, I now see the problem in the test file.

[updates]

  • If I enter a new transfer after Validating, it is shown correctly in the report.
  • If I go to the register where a transfer that shows as zero in the report was entered and change the amount, the new amount is shown in the report
  • If I Validate again after entering new transfers or editing existing ones, the Amounts in the report return to zero.
  • The same issue affects the Banking Transaction report subtotaled by Category.
  • There is a similar issue when drilling down in the Cash Flow report. In that case the total transfer amount is shown but when you double click to see the details, it finds no transactions.

It appears that the report is using a calculated value that is retrieved from Quicken's database for the Amount in the report and that Validating sets this value to zero rather than recalculating it.

In this example, there are 3 transfers from the Brokerage 4 account to other accounts. In the report, the transaction detail shows an amount of zero for each transfer but the totals are correct.

Has anyone else seen this? It is scary that Validating appears to cause the problem.

I have sent the details and a sanitized version of the test file via Report a Problem.

@Jim_Harman , I have an R56.9 setup and I see the same zero amounts you described but with one small difference where you wrote:

If I go to the register where a transfer that shows as zero in the report was entered and change the amount, the new amount is shown in the report

In my case the "new amount" for some transactions did show in the report, and for others remained at zero.

    Thanks for confirming, @BK

I think in order for an edit to correct the error, you must edit the side of the transfer where it was originally entered. Of course a sure-fire way would be to delete and re-enter the transfer.

Also I think I have seen other discussions about reports where the detail showed zero and drilling down to the actual transactions showed the correct amounts, but I have not been able able to find them.
