How to get all transactions restored in an investment account

I’ve been having problems getting new transaction downloads from my bank accounts. So I was able to reconnect my one chequing account. As Quicken was matching the bank accounts it lost my investment account at the same bank and dropped all the data. I found the data in one of my back up files (177 transactions) but don’t want to restore all the other accounts. How can I get just the Investment account data copied into the current file?

I recommend you create a unique thread for each of these questions. You'll also need to provide more information about each issue in order to get useful help.

If you want to start with the question about security quotes, respond with details for one or two of the securities that aren't updating for you. I'll check if they update for me. @NotACPA is correct - the security price information comes from an entirely different source and through an entirely different process that transaction downloads. Transaction downloads are unrelated to security price updates. Different sources. Different processes.

It would be helpful if you post a screen short of this dialogue box for one or two of the securities (this is just an illustrative example).

Are you actually running Q Canada, based upon your "chequing"? I can ask the Mods to move this thread to the Q Canada forum … but the general answer to you question is that a Restore is all or nothing. You can't restore a single account.

BUT, that aside, you might try restoring to a different file name, and not overwrite you current file, and then look into exporting the particular account and importing it into your current file.

Take LOTS of backups when attempting this.

Could you provide specifics regarding the export/import? I was able to import a file for the specific account but this came up

How were you able to Export as a CSV? I don't even show that as an option under FILE Export. Or did you do a FILE, Print to CSV?

But, in any event, CSV files can ONLY be used to import Quotes … not securities transactions. Notice that none of the data that's requested in your graphic is pertinent to an Investment account …only to Banking type accounts.

And, maybe QCda is different in allowing CSV imports. I'm surprised that you got that error message, which I've never even heard of before, rather that a flat rejection message.

okay I was able to import the data using a QIF file. Because of the total for the account on the left of the screen, I presume the data was imported. There is no transaction history showing because the account somehow is now a Simple Tracking Method. The Tracking choices are grayed out so I can’t change it to Complete. I’ve tried many online suggestions but nothing has worked

You might have to contact Q Support (this is a user-to-user forum, not Q Support) re: this latest issue. Both because you're running QCda (I don't know if it's the same as QUS in this regard) AND because while I've heard of the switch before, I haven't heard of being unable to switch back.

Use the link at the top of this page. Do NOT Google "Quicken Support" because there are numerous fraudsters who claim to be Support … but aren't.

@Just Fine I'm a Canadian SuperUser. The Canadian version does have export/import functionality that is not present in the USA version. There aren't many things about the Canadian version that are superior to the USA version, but that is one.

If I am understanding your issue correctly, you should be able to perform the export of the transactions from one account and import them into an account in the current file. I've done that successfully a number of times. Have you got this all sorted out now or are you still seeking some further assistance?

Chris_QPW has posted several times about the nuances and history of this. I'd have to think about it for a while to recall the exact differences, but the general concept is that the Canadian version permits a form of export/import that is blocked on the USA version. I think it has something to do with the granularity of the control over QIF and the ability to use QIF for all banking and investing accounts. Given that I don't use or have access to the USA version, I can't make a quick comparison to jog my memory. I do know that I have successfully used QIF export/import in the past to execute some rather surgical recoveries when I ran into data file corruption.

When it comes to the QIF format, the US and Canadian versions are "equal". The only superior importing for the Canadian version is in the QFX format. The US version only allows importing in USD, and the Canadian allows multiple currencies.

The QIF format and Quicken's importing has some major drawbacks, but in general tends to be the only way to do this in Quicken. There is the "Quicken Export Format QFX, but that is the whole file.

The QIF format has limitation like on options and such. Quicken's QIF import is terrible on getting the transfer right.

Another "limitation" (which can be an asset in some cases) is the QIF format knows nothing about currencies. The currency is dictated by the currency of the account (the QIF format just has "numbers" for the amounts). So, the accounts aren't in the "home currency" (CAD in this case) the account must be created before the import. It is a good idea to create them before anyways to ensure that they have the right account types (like brokerage instead of a retirement account type). Quicken will create accounts during the import, but they might not end up with the account type you want because the QIF account types are far more "general" then all the ones used in Quicken.

Quicken (both US and Canadian) used to be able to export can export CSV files, but when looking at the US version now I only see exporting to Excel, text, or PDF. Quicken has never been able to import transactions using CSV format.

On the issue of your Quicken register being in Simple format and it can't be changed. This has been reported by a few people with no real resolution, but I have some guesses at it.

There are some financial institutions at least in Quicken Mac threads I have seen them discussed that can only download in Simple mode. So, my guess would be that Quicken thinks that this is the case for this account. Note that for the reported cases of this in Quicken Windows accounts that were downloading just fine in Complete mode automatically changed to Simple for some reason (probably a bug).

So, my rough guess at how to get around this would be to create a manual brokerage account (not any kind of retirement account) and do the QIF import into that and see if that is now in Complete mode (make sure you select Complete mode when creating the account).

If that works, then from there you can try to do downloading.

Okay so I had to start a new account with the Complete mode and imported the data. I had to spend a chunk of time eliminating how it affected other accounts. All this was as a result of Quicken not updating my banking and credit card accounts. Now my investment accounts aren’t updating but I’ll look at that tomorrow. @Just Fine I'm curious from which financial institution you are downloading investment account transactions… there is very limited support for downloading investment transactions in the Canadian version from Canadian financial institutions.

Hmmmm… Quicken doesn't support downloading investment transactions from RBC Royal Bank. This defined in the FIDIR.TXT:

So what does one do if the quotes aren’t updating?

Also, there are a couple bank accounts I just can’t connect with Q to get updated. Not a big deal as there’s not a lot of activity in those accounts

one more question… is there any way to get my US bank accounts to update in Cdn Q instead of having to do so on my RBC account?
