Quicken is slow to load since late last week (1/17/25)

Quicken Windows Subscription Member ✭✭✭

Starting late last week, Quicken has been extremely slow to load. Normally it took about 20 seconds and now is a couple of minutes. Ran file validate and also reinstalled quicken. Is anyone else having issues? Have a suggestion?

    Hello @Chuck56,

Did this issue with slowness begin after a recent update? Did anything occur that you noticed before the slowness began? Do you experience slowness throughout every function of Quicken or only when starting up and loading your file initially?

    Let me know!

Hi Jasmine. The only thing that happened late last week is that it appeared that I had malware on my computer. I downloaded Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro and successfully removed the malware. I have since uninstalled Malwarebytes thinking it was using a lot of resources and blocking / slowing my data file load but that did not help. Hitman Pro is still installed, but I excluded my Q data file from being scanned by it. Once quicken loads after 2+ minutes, everything works fine. It is just the initial loading. The data file is on my C: drive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Hello @Chuck56,

Thank you for providing more information. I know that you mentioned uninstalling/reinstalling the program, however, I invite you to review the instructions below to see if you performed the same steps. It is recommended to save a backup (just in case). You can refer to the following support articles for instructions on uninstalling here and reinstalling here.

However, after you have uninstalled and before you proceed with reinstalling, please open your Windows File Explorer and navigate to This PC > C: Drive > Program Files (x86) and delete the folder titled "Quicken" (doing so does not affect your data files).

After you have deleted this folder, go ahead and try reinstalling.

Please let me know how it goes!

Jasmine. That did it. I followed your recommendations, and the performance is back to normal. My previous reinstall was just done on top of the old files, which was obviously not the correct way. Thank you so much. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

Hi Jasmine. Just a follow up relative to the issue you helped me with previously. I found something interesting. Once again, when I would try to open Quicken, it was slow to open like before. However, I found that when I turn off my WIFI on my desktop and then turn it back on, Quicken opens normally. My question is….. Does Quicken on my desktop try to contact a Quicken server or another device on the internet when it is loading? Just curious. And just to eliminate a variable, I also reloaded my WIFI drivers on my desktop to no avail. Just wanted to share.

    Thanks

    Thank you for the follow-up,

To answer your question, while Quicken can work offline, when internet is available, Quicken does connect with its servers. When you open Quicken, it will verify subscription status. It may also check for program updates, and if you have it set to run One Step Update (OSU) on launch, it will also connect to perform OSU. For more information, please see this FAQ:

    I hope this helps!

Thanks. That may be where the hang up (slowness in opening) is originating from, i.e., connecting to quicken online to verify subscription.

I'm using two data files, one for my mother whose finances I take care of, and my own. Mine is large with data going back to 2000. Hers is small, with only 5 years of simple banking and credit cards. When I open her file Quicken is as fast as it can be. When I open mine it's incredibly laggy (not sure if that's a word).

So point is, it's not got anything to do with verifying subscription status. Quicken is choking on big data files, like it never did before. Seems like this has been going on for a number of months, maybe over a year.

There's a website that maintains prior versions of Quicken. I'm gonna see if there's a version that works better. Quicken should be trying to figure this out. In the 40 years I've been using Quicken I've never seen them be proactive when updates break the program. They need competition badly, but there is none. When it works, it's fantastic. When it doesn't, many hours of your life get sucked up.

    mtbdog,

After trying many recommendations to fix my slowness issue, I got to thinking that maybe network drivers or other config files in Win 11 were possibly corrupted, so I did a….

Settings/advanced options/recovery/Fix problems using Windows Update

This reloaded win 11 without affecting data or apps.

Also, using "Driver Booster", i upgraded all out-of-date system / network drivers.

    This resolved my issue.

mtbdog- Not sure if you have solved your issue yet but if you haven't you might want to give the suggestion from Chuck56 a try - fix problems using Windows update. I was having the same issue as you and I tried every suggestion that folks made and was ready to uninstall and find a different program to use. As a last resort I tried the suggestion from Chuck56 and it worked. Best of luck in finding a solution that works.
