Checking account totals on right don't match check register balance.

I have two checking accounts, one has a single saving goal. The other checking account has 3 saving goals.

Today I was in the checking account with 1 saving goal and I unchecked the "show saving goals transaction in register….." So the balance in register should have matched the right hand column under all the accounts listed. It didn't! The account list on right for that account was higher (this account has 3 saving goals). Just a little higher around $20.

The other checking account was about $5,000 higher on right hand side under account lists than check register showed (this account has only 1 saving goal) .

I just did reconcile on both account and they balance. So this means the saving goals and register all match with bank statement.

It seems when I use to uncheck "show saving Goals" the account list on right amount matched the check register.

When it is checked, the AMOUNTS MATCH on right hand side and check register. Might add when not checked the bold BANK amount on right hand side at top above checking is really really high, so must be increasing some other accounts below when unchecked. None of those are checking just CDs.

So all reconciles fine, I match the bank amount just fine when I add back in what hasn't cleared. However, saving goals and check register don't match the amount on right hand side under the list of accounts. I don't do any online Quicken stuff.

Then if I add the saving goals up for an account and add check register amount WITH Show Saving Goals " checked- it doesn't match check register with show saving goal not checked, but only around $30 difference on each one was $37.06 the other $38.72. Which seems even more confusing.

I should also add, Super Validate shows no errors.

Any ideas why I am seeing this?

Guess I shouldn't worry all accounts reconcile, just something in Quicken and those totals.

I hope this makes sense, not to good explaining.

    Hello @Divemaster,

Thank you for reaching out with this issue.

Have you noticed this discrepancy before, or is this the first time it has occurred? When you toggle the "Show Saving Goals" option on and off, does the difference in balances remain consistent? Have you checked the Account Balances Report to see if those numbers align with what’s shown in the register and account list? When the bold bank amount at the top increases after unchecking the option, have you noticed if specific accounts, like CDs, reflect that change? Finally, did this issue start occurring after a recent Quicken update, or have there been any recent adjustments to your Savings Goals?

    Let me know!

Have you noticed this discrepancy before, or is this the first time it has occurred?

Yes, I believe I made a similar post about a year ago or more and no one responded to it June 2023. I just put up with it and pretty much ignore as it doesn't affect the monthly reconciliations.

When you toggle the "Show Saving Goals" option on and off, does the difference in balances remain consistent?

Well they change, but they always change to the same amounts.

Have you checked the Account Balances Report to see if those numbers align with what’s shown in the register and account list?

Yes I ran Cash Account Balance taxed and not taxed that comes with Quicken with just checking and their saving goals and they match register and amounts on right side of screen.

When the bold bank amount at the top increases after unchecking the option, have you noticed if specific accounts, like CDs, reflect that change?

No have so many CD I have not checked, but they are not included or amount would be much larger. I have checked the difference and it is not any single account amount that changes from the account list and from quick look not a combination? I have checked the long list on side when unchecked and all numbers stay same except 2 checking and the very top Banking amount. Even the Net Worth at bottom stay the same checked or unchecked.

Finally, did this issue start occurring after a recent Quicken update, or have there been any recent adjustments to your Savings Goals?

No it has been going on for some time now, saving goals get transferred in and out several times a week.

I should add, I did a little test thinking saving goals had a problem.

    So after a backup.

Transferred all Saving Goals back to their home accounts, then deleted all Saving Goal accounts. Even did a year end copy and got rid of 2011 through 2014 data. However, then accounts all showed the same as before as if I had it unchecked (which I guess is not a surprise as I didn't have any SG). Also, register still didn't match account list on right same amounts as prior to deleting Saving Goals accounts.

Then I restored from the backup.

OK, so this is not a SG issue? Am I understanding this correctly?

That suggests to me that there are a few things to look into that could possibly cause this problem.:

    1. Make sure the transactions in your Account Registers are sorted in date order with the oldest date at the top and the newest date at the bottom. Do this by clicking on the Date column header.
    2. Do you have Pending Transactions enabled with the option to include them in the account register and account balance? You can view this by going to Edit > Preferences > Pending Transactions: If it shows ON, slide the bar to the left to turn it OFF.
    3. Another thing to look into: At the top right of the Accounts side bar click on the Gear icon. Do you have Show Current Balance in Account Bar checked or do you have Show Ending Balance in Account Bar checked. I generally have Current Balance checked because that will not include any future dated transactions that might be appearing in the Account Registers. But if you are including future dated transactions in your Account Registers and want the Account side bar to also include that, then make sure that Show Ending Balance in Account Bar is checked.
    4. Do you have an older backup file dated from before you when you started seeing this issue? It can be much older provided it will have all of the accounts included in it. Restore that backup file and then go to the Opening Balance transaction (the oldest dated transaction) for each affected account and write down what the dollar amount of that dollar amount. Then reopen you main data file. If the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount there does not match what you wrote down from the restored backup file.

Do each of these one at a time and check the results. It doesn't matter which order you do them in. Did any one of these steps resolve the issue for you?

This is really hard but I found out something I will try to explain. Unchecked means the box in SHOW SAVING GOAL TRANSACTION IN REGISTER AND REPORTS in NOT Checked. Checked means I have it checked.

The unchecked total banking amount is higher than checked total banking amount.

The unchecked net worth shown at bottom of line on right shows the same amount as checked (They are same amount), but if you add them up, unchecked net worth is really $5635.28 too high than what is actually displayed on the screen. So the display Quicken is showing is wrong.

If I subtract that high unchecked banking amount at the top line from the checked banking amount at top line it is $5635.28 too high in unchecked.

The difference high amount of total banking amount displayed on first line, minus the total saving goals (which are grayed out when unchecked) is $5635.28. Is Quicken really adding it in anyway? Shouldn't as those amounts are grayed out and in the register at this point in time.

Register amount on unchecked account A is $1.66 higher than account list on right hand side.

Register amount on unchecked account B is $5636.94 lower than account list on right hand side.

So if I subtract the $1.66 (higher amt) in register from the $5636.94 (lower amt in register), I get $5635.28.

I keep coming up with this $5635.28 and what that means, I don't know, but it was an interesting process.

I have searched for these amounts and did find one $1.66 tran from long ago, but nothing to do with saving goals.

I know this is hard to follow.

I do have in date order and pending transactions is slid to the LEFT-off. Also, have show current balance in account bar. No older backup, have had this issue for at least a year. Since everything reconciles fine I really haven't worried about it much, but do wonder. When I use register amounts for calculations I use current amount and not pending or future.

I guess this one is a tough and confusing, would call support, but doubt they would know what is going on?

Unless someone else pops in here with some other suggestions I think it might be a good idea to call Quicken Support ( https://www.quicken.com/support/#contact-support ). I am at a loss on this one and Support has the capability to view your Quicken file remotely so you can walk them through what you are seeing.

This is a bug, it's been doing this at least since 2019. I don't think it will ever be fixed :-(

Wow, it sounds like you have seen this problem also?? Thought I was the only one in the whole world seeing something like this. Good to know I am not alone.
