Match Securities Not Working

I have several different data files with investment accounts in them. There is a Match Securities dialog that is supposed to pop up whenever a security downloads that Quicken is not able to match to a security already in the Security List.

This Match Securities function works well in with some of the data files but no longer works in others. In the files it no longer works in Quicken simply adds them to the Security List without any notification being provided.

What is even more confusing is that the same new securities sometimes download into different data files. When that happens, some data files will produce that Match Securities popup but others will not. This is not random….each data file is consistent in how it manages new securities that are downloaded. Each of these data files is unique so there should be no cross-over data sharing between them.

This is not a new issue. It's been happening for at least a year but I've simply tolerated it. It's now gotten to the point that I really don't want to tolerate it any more.

I haven't been able to figure out how to get Match Securities working in all these data files, again. I do not have these files set up to automatically add downloaded transactions to the registers. I have done Reset Alerts (multiple times). And I have found no Preference Setting that addresses Match Securities.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can fix this issue?

    I wonder

Edit / Preferences / Downloaded Transactions

Offers an option to Compare account portfolio after download. You can set that to happen or not happen for each investment account.

I wonder if that might be a factor in the behavior you see. It does not say that impacts matching of securities and my previous (years old?) observations would say the match pop-up would still appear. But it does seem to be a possible factor. I beleive that selection used to be under the Tools / Online Center selection.

Thanks. That was something I wondered about, too. In fact, last week I double checked this setting and confirmed that Compare Account Portolio After Download is already set up for each investment account in each data file.

But the question still remains because a new security was downloaded today into three different data files. After running OSU in the first and third data files the Match Securities popup occurred. But after running OSU on the 2nd data file, the Match Securities popup did not occur.

It's really not been an issue where this causes issues with the Reconcile Securities function because the new securities do download as they should. It's just that the Match Securities feature is not working.

This missing Match Securities popup has never (that I can recall) been an issue affecting accounts nor securities values. It is problematic for me because I place orders for brokered CDs for accounts in each of these 3 data files and I always assign a user-defined Asset Class to them. If I don't get prompted when the new CDs are downloaded then I miss the opportunity to catch them upfront so I can assign the correct custom Asset Class to them. Then that messes up my allocations analysis.

BTW, this is not a brokered CDs issue. It affects any new security that is downloaded.

Is it or can you test if it is account related? If a new security downloads to account A, no prompt. New security download to account B gets the prompt.

    Sorry. Hit Post inadvertently.

My prior question really makes little sense. The comparison is against the file security list, not an account aspect.

I do understand that the downloads are from the same brokerage, right?

I'm not sure this original statement is true:

I have several different data files with investment accounts in them. There is a Match Securities dialog that is supposed to pop up whenever a security downloads that Quicken is not able to match to a security already in the Security List.

This Match Securities function works well in with some of the data files but no longer works in others. In the files it no longer works in Quicken simply adds them to the Security List without any notification being provided.

There is little reason to ask the user to about "matching a security", if this is a brand-new security and the download information has all it needs to create the security. I view this question as you got a new security that is "close to one that you already have" and as such it is asking if it is new or if it is in fact one that you already have.

EDIT: and Quicken's attempt to match might be triggered by the fact that not all of the security information has been provided. For instance, if Quicken is provided with the CUSIP ID I don't see how it could not know what to security in your list doesn't already have that CUSIP ID, but then again there is also the setting of "Match with online security". If you have turned that off, then that would also trigger different results.

It used to be that every data file would always prompt me to either accept a newly downloaded security as a new security or give me the option to match it with an existing security. Over a period of months that popup simply stopped coming up for 3 of my data files. It is consistent with all investment accounts in these 3 data files which tells me it is a global issue/setting in the data files.

Also, it was the exact same new issue brokered CD that was downloaded into 3 data files this morning (only 1 is part of the group of files referenced in the last paragraph)….two of them produced the Match Securities popup but the other one did not.

In other data files the Match Securities popup still occurs every time there is a new security downloaded. It is consistent with all investment accounts in these data files, again, pointing to it being a global thing and not an account issue.

Also, Help says the following. It sounds like it should happen every time a new security is downloaded.:

The only place I know of where I can turn off the setting for Matched with online security is in Edit Security Details and that is a setting specific to one security, not a global setting….and only after the security is already added to Security List. Is there Global setting option for this that I am missing?

Yes, the downloads are all from Fidelity Investments. I manage the financials for a couple of family members, including their investment accounts. Sometimes I will find an investment opportunity that would be good fit for us and for both of them so I will place orders for all 3 of us at the same time. Those Buy transactions then download in the next 1-2 days, all on the same day. That's what happened today: During OSU the exact same new issue brokered CD downloaded into each of these 3 files. Two got the Match Securities popup up but the third one did not.

I don't think the process is easily condensed into a few words.

In a test file, I created a new account and with a few intermediary actions imported a QFX file from 2013 into the account. Below is one of the Match offers that came up.

The program is offering to match what the QFX brought in as Google Class A to what was already in the test file as Alphabet Class C. Clearly the match on ticker (GOOG) was enough to create this suggestion of a match since there is no commonality of name or CUSIP. Other securities have already been added when they came up in the same manner with the "No" as the suggested match (Amex, the two AQR's, Blackrock, et al.).

Here is one where the 'suggestion' is made based on the first 7 character of the security name. Neither ticker nor CUSIP match, though the first 6 characters of the CUSIP match

Apparently given a variety of possible matches, Vanguard Morgan… is the closest to Vanguard MSCI… (I agree with that, by the way, but there is still a lot to say they are totally different).

I suppose I am agreeing with @Chris_QPW about the program looking for something close to match to, but the import process was also asking about match or new for every new security even when the download had sufficient info (name, ticker, CUSIP) to create the new security without asking via the pop-up.

I am still in a quandary why @Boatnmaniac is getting these popups for some files and not for others when the raw info is coming from the same FI. Possibly the EWC+ (?) from Fidelity is treated differently than this QFX file import test I have done.

Some great examples but for me most of the time that Match Securities popup does not default to "Yes. This security matches the security selected below" option.

Instead, most of the time for me it auto selects and populates the "No. Add this new security to Quicken." That is what happened in the two files this morning. Regardless of which is auto selected by Quicken, I would simply be happy if the popup would simply occur in the files where it is not occurring at all because then I could select the correct option and it would flag me that a new security has been downloaded. Right now, in those 3 files I get absolutely no notification that a new security has downloaded and that is troublesome.

Also, my Fidelity Investments connections in all files (except for 1 test file) are set up with DC. The EWC+ Fidelity connection (Fidelity - Investments and Retirement Accounts) for QWin supports only the Fidelity Visa Card, not yet investment accounts. (I believe EWC+ does work for investments in QMac but am not absolutely sure about that.)

I just opened another test file where the Match Securities popup always occurs. Here is what that popup looks like after I ran OSU. This is the exact same new brokered CD security that I've been referencing above in this thread. Note how it defaulted for me.:

I would say most of the securities being brought in through this import defaulted to the No suggestion. Those were the Amex, Blackrock type securities I mentioned that had no close match. I was providing examples where I perceived Quicken offered good match or poor match suggestions.

Thanks for clarifying the Fidelity connection.

The only condition I recall where the program just moves through everything automatically is if the downloaded file is getting linked for the very first time to a new, empty, no current transactions account. Clearly not your circumstance.

    Yes, I agree.

I do remember seeing a few others posting about this situation a while back but I can't find them so I don't know whatever came out of that. I think I try searching Community, again.

Interesting. I updated to R61.20 earlier this week and now I am getting the Matching Security popup in all of my data files, again. I have no idea what changed to make this consistent in all data files, again.
