Why does my quicken bank page look different

I've had Quicken Classic for Mac for years. I always backed up my banking data both on the mac and an external flash drive. I made the mistake of purchasing the correct Quicken online backup. No trouble setting up but the display of the data ( my various bank/checking accounts) is just different and no matter what I "select" in terms of display…..check number, payee, notes, dates, etc. it JUST does not really look the same as the old display. Sometimes I get check number, or memos I have added or any number of things on my old display. No matter what I select as my choices of display, the actual display is inconsistent and confusing.

@KJK1900 We'll probably need a little more information to try to help you. The look of Quicken's registers hasn't changed since the modern Quicken Mac came out a decade ago. (Had you been using the old Quicken 2007 until recently? The modern Quicken Mac does have a different look than the old Quicken 2007.) The optional Online Backup service doesn't have any impact on the look of the registers.

I'm not sure what you mean that the display is inconsistent. You say it doesn't look the same as it used to, but I don't know what you were used to, so you'll need to add more description about what has changed for you. If you're comfortable capturing a screenshot of part of your register (and blacking out any personal information), that might make it easier to describe what isn't right to you.

If you're having trouble setting up which columns are visible, the order of the columns, let us know any we can provide guidance with that.

Any additional information you can provide will help us help you.

perhaps I did not explain properly. The Qicken version is current with all updates. When I go to a specific bank and either download from bank or add a check myself the screen shows date, then check #, than payee, deposit/withdrawal, any explanation I add, and several other categories of info. The display I now get doesn’t have date or check number nor most of the categories. There is a column on the far right which says it allows check numbers and a choice of displays but it still won’t give most of the usual choices. That is it purports to allow you to display info you choose….but it does not work.point is it is an entirely different format. Thank you for trying.

I don't understand this "choice of displays" you're describing. Are you able to post a screenshot of what you're seeing? I also don't understand what you mean that the display won't show "most of the categories." There is a single Category column, and each transaction line shows the category for the transaction.

In general, in every register, you can set which columns are visible by clicking on the Columns icon on the bottom toolbar. You can change the order or columns in a register by clicking and dragging a columns heading to the left or right. You can change the width of a column by clicking and dragging the divider between two column headings to the left or right.

But I'm afraid what you're describing and what I'm describing are different.

Is it possible you've clicked on one of the account group headings in the left sidebar rather than your actual checking account? For instance, if I click on "Banking" or "Checking", I'll see a different register than if I click on one of my actual checking accounts under Checking:

Every register can be individually configured to show the columns you want, in the order you want. So clicking on Banking may show different fields than your checking account. I wonder if that's what you're describing?

@jacobs I think perhaps when they talk about "column on the right" and "choice of displays" they're talking about the Columns button (the pop-up for that is on the right side of the window).

That is what I am talking about. But when I make those choices the result in terms of what I see on the screen doesn’t make sense. For example if I select check number, I still don’t see the check number.

I do appreciate the help. There are worse problems in the world.

If you select Check Number in the Columns pop-up, it should have added the column — but it may require scrolling to the right to see it on the far right side. Then you can click and drag the Check # column heading to the left, until it’s right after the Date column if that’s where you want it.

But please re-read my post above, as nothing should have changed your existing columns, and I suspect you’re viewing an account group register which includes your checking transactions, rather than viewing your specific checking account, which should be unchanged from the past.

I don't wish to hijack this thread, and I will let Jon/JacobS resume interaction, but you did mention Quicken Online Backup as if it precipitated this change. (It won't.)

Are you now inadvertently accessing Quicken on the Web and accessing your data there? That will still have your data, albeit in a much different format.

The fact that you mentioned "online" and the sudden change made me question this.

I am not certain I understand the question but I am using the same link, password, etc. that I have been using for years. I click on the same symbol to get there. But I will look more carefully. Thank you.

Quicken has had a Mobile component for the past few years that allows people to access their data on cell phones or other computers via a web browser. You can see and edit your data, but in a different format than on your computer.

I don't know if this is the case, but since you mentioned enabling online backup, I didn't know if you somehow are now working with your data on the web instead of the actual Quicken program on your computer.

I don't know as I am not there to see what you are seeing.

I have only used Quicken on my MacBook. The online backup was purchased from Quicken. I can access my data…it is just much less user friendly.

    I truly appreciate your input.

I think we're still puzzling to understand what has changed for the worse for you, since the basic look of Quicken Mac hasn't changed over the past 10 years.

It could help if you capture and post a screenshot (not including any sensitive personal data) of part of what you're seeing.
