After 30+ years using Quicken for Windows, the last 5+ years using VMware on a Mac, I finally migrated to Quicken for Mac over the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it went.
Here are some random observations:
- I tried migrating 2 years ago and it did not go well. Dozens if not hundreds of conversion errors happened - this time it was close to flawless.
- My data file shrunk from about 200 MB to about 20 MB. That alone made it worthwhile!
- I find the UX of the Mac version really nice and modern. Lots of thoughtful touches.
- I use Web Connect (not Express, which seems to have issues with my bank, RBC). So far I can't get the downloaded files to open automatically in Quicken. This may be a Safari "safe files" limitation. After extensive Googling it doesn't seem easy/possible to add qfx files to Safari's safe files list (you could do this a few years ago by creating a plist).
- Budgets don't get migrated, so I had to recreate mine from scratch. A bit disappointing, but not too bad as my budget is fairly simple.
I'm looking forward to exploring more of what Quicken for Mac has to offer!
