My Migration from Quicken for Windows - Pleasantly Surprised

Member ✭✭✭✭

After 30+ years using Quicken for Windows, the last 5+ years using VMware on a Mac, I finally migrated to Quicken for Mac over the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it went.

Here are some random observations:

  1. I tried migrating 2 years ago and it did not go well. Dozens if not hundreds of conversion errors happened - this time it was close to flawless.
  2. My data file shrunk from about 200 MB to about 20 MB. That alone made it worthwhile!
  3. I find the UX of the Mac version really nice and modern. Lots of thoughtful touches.
  4. I use Web Connect (not Express, which seems to have issues with my bank, RBC). So far I can't get the downloaded files to open automatically in Quicken. This may be a Safari "safe files" limitation. After extensive Googling it doesn't seem easy/possible to add qfx files to Safari's safe files list (you could do this a few years ago by creating a plist).
  5. Budgets don't get migrated, so I had to recreate mine from scratch. A bit disappointing, but not too bad as my budget is fairly simple.

I'm looking forward to exploring more of what Quicken for Mac has to offer!

@Dave Ings Thanks for posting to share your experience and observations. In this forum, we more often hear complaints when things go wrong, so it's nice to sometimes hear when things work well!

@jacobs I once managed a global support team for a popular enterprise software product. So I'm very aware that most posts to support forums are problems, not plaudits. I guess that's why I go out of my way to offer praise when it's due. Cheers!
