It would be helpful to allow users to create custom account sub-groups (e.g. create "Roth accounts" as a sub-group of Retirement) and move accounts to the desired sub-group.
[Edited - Readability]
it would be great to have more Flexibility with the side bar.. Creating new categories/groups and be able to adjust their order on the side bar
I have been asking for the ability to add additional groupings in the Investment Group to include subgroups like: Stocks, Preferred Stocks, Muni Bonds, and Corporate Bonds.
My Investing 'Retirement' subgroup currently contains 16 active accounts across several institutions. It would be very helpful if I could create custom subgroups by owner and account type:
"S RRSP" - 4 accounts
"C RRIF" - 2 accounts
"C RRIF Locked" - 1 account
"C RRIF Spousal" - 2 accounts
"S TFSA" - 4 accounts
"C TFSA" - 3 accounts
This feature would provide clarity, convenience and insight through the totals displayed in the Sidebar and the Dashboard/Portfolio/Transaction tabs on the associated Account Group page.
What you're asking for is the ability to regroup, and make custom subgroups, in the left sidebar. This is a longstanding request from Quicken Mac users to the developers. Over the history of Quicken Mac's development, the developers originally said they planned to allow this, then changed to saying they did not plan to build this, and more recently indicated they might be able to do it in the future, but that it is actually a much more complex change than it would appear to be. You can view the existing Idea thread here, and add your vote and comment in that thread:
Thanks @jacobs, I appreciate the response.
The Idea thread you reference mentions the manual-reordering-within-subgroups feature that was added a while ago (Yay! Use it, love it!) which gives me hope 😊. However the thread summary (which is what folks see first) doesn't mention or imply custom-subgroups. I read it and thought "Oh yeah, they've already implemented that." Also, since it doesn't appear in the "Ideas for Mac Classic" list (or at least I couldn't find it) it's not going to get much attention.
So … any hints on encouraging up-votes for this thread?
I remember there was a small survey not too long ago asking whether simple reordering was enough or whether people wanted full control (moving accounts to different groups, creating their own subgroups) It may be that survey was in a beta testing forum; I can’t remember. But it showed they were thinking about it and weighing whether to invest a little or a lot more time in creating a solution most users would find good enough.
As for getting more upvotes for an Idea, it’s typically a painfully slow process. I edited the title of the thread slightly to perhaps make the intent clearer. The only other thing you can do is periodically post a follow-up message in the thread, which brings it to the top of the Discussions page, so users who browse the site are more likely to see it.
Thanks again @jacobs, I'll keep an eye on the thread and post encouraging words from time to time :-)
In the mean time, if there's a need for beta testers please let me know… I'm a retired developer (Windows drivers, C++) with bandwidth to spare for playing around with stuff.
Cheers,
Steve
@Steve_Cdn_Mac If you're interested in being a Quicken beta tester, message Quicken Bree. She coordinates the beta testing.
Thanks @Jon. I found "Quicken Beta" on the app's Help menu and it took me to the sign-up site.
Catch ya on the beta forums … if I'm accepted :-)
Hello All,
This Idea seems to have stalled, and we would like to gauge the current interest in this request. Please vote if you have not done so already!
Thank you!
If I could vote more I would …
Alternativly, the Investment summary pages currently allow a subgroup of accounts to be selected but can only select one account at a time and only non-hidden accounts and the selection cannot be saved for later use. Updating this UI to allow subgroups to be named and saved would go a long way to easily provide useful functionality. Just a thought. Hope this gains traction. Tell your friends!
@Quicken Anja I think the problem is that this specific functionality is a subset of the broader feature request to allow customization of the sidebar in the Idea thread linked above. I think there is significant interest from Quicken Mac users for that flexibility. This thread also "suffers" from having a title which probably doesn't clearly reflect what is being asked for; it would be better if this was retitled: "Allow creation of sidebar custom account groups and re-ordering"; I think the use of "editable types" instead of "custom account groups" may contribute to this thread not getting as much support as actually exists for what Steve was original asking for. (@Quicken Anja or @Steve_Cdn_Mac: would you be okay with having the title edited?)
@Steve_Cdn_Mac When you talk about "investment summary pages", could you clarify what exactly you're describing? Do you mean the Portfolio screen? If so, one comment and one small trick…
I'd suggest creating a separate Idea topic for this, as it may or may not be related to custom account grouping in the sidebar. (Maybe this is why the developers haven't yet allowed sidebar customization, because they'd have to make custom groups and account ordering work in other places — like the Portfolio view — but maybe this is two separate issues.)
