attached documents

Hi,

I attach documents to transactions in my account register. But my drive is getting too fussy and I'd like to reorganize. If I move documents to a different folder will this break the links and, if so, will Quicken be able to find them again? Or do I have to manually reconnect everything? Thanks

Think twice about attaching documents to Q. They'll ONLY be visible from within Q and they cause INCREDIBLE file bloat.

Instead, consider getting a document manager of some sort (OR, just Window's folders by year and month) and store the documents there with an entry in the Memo field of the Q transactions re: the document.

And, I'm not positive, but I'm fairly sure that YES, as you propose it you'll need to manually reconnect everything.

I'm on the other side of the fence from @NotACPA . I prefer to attach documents to Quicken transactions for easy research and retrieval of information. I just used it today to obtain 3-year-old purchase receipts by searching in the register.

However, you must be aware that the documents add to the size of your data file and, just like with your hard-copy paper file cabinet, you would be advised to routinely purge obsolete, aged-out, and uneeded files. I do this annually.

thanks everyone, as I understand it adding links to documents increases th size of the file. I'm not too concerned about this because I don't do it that much - only expenses I need to save for tax purposes and my PC has 3 drives with loads or room. I'll archive the oldest if it ever becomes an issue. The real reason for my questions was to ask if Quicken would reconnect to the files if I moved documents into a different folder. I'll test it and if it doesn't work I won't do it again. Thanks

Quicken attachments are stored inside your Quicken .qdf data file. They are not links to files in the PC file system. If you move your .qdf file, all its attachments will still be accessible from within Quicken.

I too attach documents within Quicken. I find that taking a document, picture, and etc. works well for me when I copy and paste the document, picture, etc into an Adobe .pdf and save the .pdf file and attach the .pdf in Quicken., With few exceptions, all attachments are .pdf files for consistancy throughout my Quicken.

Windows 11 (2 separate computers)..... Quicken Premier.. HAVE USED QUICKEN CONTINUOUSLY SINCE 1985.
