MS Windows - Unusable when no internet available, but not sure if it's the software or file.

This was the first time this happened. I lost internet for 3 days and tried to enter transactions. It took >5 minutes for for Quicken to load, if it loaded at all. And it never loaded fully, or kept crashing and had to be closed via task manager. However I am not sure if the issue is with Quicken or with the location my Quicken files are stored. Here's a bulleted breakdown:

  • Quicken installed and used on my desktop and laptop - Both running Windows 11 Pro.
  • All the Quicken files are in their own folder, in OneDrive fro business.
  • All OneDrive files are set to mirror ("Always keep on this device") locally.
  • Troubleshooting steps. No improvement at all:
    • Obs.: While I normally open Quicken and it already knows the location of the last file used, I clicked directly on the .QDF files for these attempts.
    • Copied the Quicken folder to a "regular" OneDrive account.
    • Copied the Quicken folder to a Google Drive. Same local "mirror configurations as OneDrive.
    • Copied to a local folder in the computer's drive.
    • Tried all steps on both the laptop and desktop.
    • Tried the same steps with locally stored backups.

Got my internet back today and everything works as normal. So, is it Quicken, trying to authenticate my account before letting me use it, the file location, or something else? If it's Quicken restricting me from using the software, is there a temporary "grace period"? I will be travelling soon for 3 months to a location where there might be minimal and spotty internet service.

Tks in advance

@Mike9 I have the same OneDrive Setup as you do. I disconnected all internet connections and opened Quicken. It worked just fine without the issues you described. The only issues I experienced was when I tried to set up an offline account. It kept asking me to sign in with my Quicken ID. I kept closing the sign in window until it went away. This happened only once. When I closed out of Quicken and went back in, I tried the "Add Account" again and it didn't ask me to sign in again with my Quicken ID.

I turned the internet connect on and off several times, and I never had any issues. I really didn't see any performance issues. It seem to be working the same, except of course, I didn't have any online services.

I don't use Onedrive, so I can't test this fully, but if you disable your network card and wifi, Quicken should work since it can't try to use the internet. If you only disconnect the network (has in cable is out, etc), Quicken gets stuck trying to make a connection.

I stress disable since you need to do that in Windows Network settings.

    @Mike9

To @splasher point, I should have made it clear that I disabled all network connections, not just the internet connection.

That could be the reason why I didn't see the issues you did.

If you have a laptop, airplane mode works the same as disabling your network connections.

Quicken user since Q1999. Currently using QW2017.
