You don't have the permission to change your username?!!?

I just had the most absurd and annoying live conversation with Quicken support. 😠

My "Account & Privacy Settings" show the pencil edit icon, but it's not allowing me to change my username. This is a serious privacy issue, and it's totally inexplicable that Quicken doesn't allow users to control what they show in the Community.

I was told that I needed to post a message here, and that a community administrator would reply. That's pretty circular logic.. but here it is. I want the control over my username.

    Hello @MikeD1,

Thank you for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, the platform we use doesn't give users the ability to change their own usernames.

I'll be happy to help you change your username though. Please let me know what you'd like to change it to, and provided that the name isn't already in use, I'll change it for you.

I look forward to your response!

Thanks Kristina. This is such an obvious security & privacy issue, I find it egregiously irresponsible for Quicken to allow it. Nevertheless, please change to MikeD1, or something similar. Will that remove the auto-generated username from my posts?

    Thank you for your reply,

I changed your username. It removes the old username from everyplace except where you were tagged by username. I updated the tag from earlier in this discussion & the other discussion you started, and removed the quote from your responses in both discussions, since that also showed the old username.

    Thank you!

Thanks Kristina. Please make sure that Quicken works on a fix for this. Why is the edit icon even there?

I was shocked to see that my post was first shown with my complete email address.

    Thank you for your reply,

Quicken does not automatically generate a username for you. When you create your account on the Community, it does ask for email, phone number, and password.

However, once you've verified your email, it takes you to a screen where you can input the username you want to use.

If your email automatically got filled in, it's likely that happened due to an autofill option turned on in your web browser.

    Thank you!

    Krisitna,

That may be the case. I've used Quicken so long I can't recall. Nevertheless, it doesn't excuse Quicken from preventing users to edit their username. I hope you realize that can inadvertently create a security issue, if the explanation you described is correct. Users should ALWAYS have control of their accounts.

Not Quicken's decision. Quicken Kristina has already explained that. It's a limitation of the platform.

And, as she also explained, the error appears to have been on your part, not Q's.

What kind of platform restricts users from control over their Username? Quicken could easily address that. It's their platform!

And as regards the explanation provided by https://community.quicken.com/profile/10139481/Quicken%20Kristina , it's not at all certain that's what happened here. I've had a Quicken account for a long time, and when the desktop software asks me to login, it only uses my email address. I never had a "Username", until the email address on my account appeared as such in the 1st community post I made the other day. As I was in the process of trying to correct that, the platform software quickly tripped off the email domain. I didn't and couldn't do that.

    Thank you for your reply,

To clarify, when you log into the Quicken program or into your My Account page on Quicken.com, you use your Quicken ID, which is the email address associated with your Quicken account.

Your login for the Quicken Community is completely separate from that. I can see that you just joined the Quicken Community on the 16th of this month. The screenshots in my earlier post show the screens you would have seen while creating your account on the Quicken Community.

    Thank you!

@MikeD1 , Nice username. Like you, I have experienced this challenge with many other sites as well as there are many sites out there that do not allow the user to change their information at will, forcing you to contact them to do that. They have good reasons for that: when you change your username, the old one may remain unavailable for a while and therefore by restricting and managing such change, they can have better control over it. They are also trying to prevent bots to flood the systems to make changes.

I recognize your frustration and hope you can get past this since @Quicken Kristina already resolved it for you.
