Lack of Investment Reporting and Investment Management Features

I have been using QWin for a few decades and with the recent purchase of a MacBook would like to move from QWin to QMac.

I believe I saw another post calling for the ability to modify the lists of Security Types and Asset Classes. That's an important feature that's missing.

And I'm shocked that apparently there's no method to create/save reports for investment accounts/data in QMac. Whether that be the transactions themselves or an overall/specific portfolio view. I have a couple dozen reports saved in QWin that I use and export to spreadsheets for further analysis to support investment decision-making, and it's critical to me to have access to that data.

Is there any insight as to if/when Quicken will enhance the capabilities for investments in QMac?

And for those of you using QMac as your primary financial tool, what have you done to support your investment management activities? At this point it seems like the only viable alternative is to use a different tool.

My investment management needs are pretty simple; the asset allocation panel on the dashboard tells me what I need to know. (Before that came along I used a spreadsheet.) It would be nice to have a calculator that would make it easier to reallocate funds but I have a spreadsheet for that too.

Customizing the list of asset classes is a planned feature, but Quicken doesn't announce the schedule for such things in advance, they show up when they show up. There are multiple idea threads for investing reports, most of them are still "under consideration" so what we have now is all we're likely to have for the foreseeable future..

@Jon Thanks. Not sure if that thread is more helpful or scary :). Looks like it dates back to 2017 and the capability was officially accepted as a planned feature about a year and a half ago, so apparently it's an extremely low priority to Quicken to implement.

Not necessarily. 😉 There are dozens of feature requests currently marked as Planned by the developers, but the Quicken Mac development team is small. So when unimplemented features linger for a long time, it doesn't indicate lack of interest or low priority, it more indicates requests overwhelming capacity to act on them all. Over the past two years, the Mac team has been involved in building the business & invoicing functionality which had never existed for the Mac product before, and that has consumed a lot of time and resources at the expense of implementing many other requested features.

Correct that you cannot create and save custom investment reports. Supposedly this is coming, but for now, it odes not exist. That said, there is a lot you can do with the current product which may be adequate enough for many of your needs. For instance, you mention transaction reports. Again, you can't build and save a report; however, you can use the Search tool and filters to generate whatever list of transactions you might want, and then print or export them. Similarly, the Portfolio screen offers a lot of customizability with the various filters, and those screens can be exported. You just have to set up the criteria each time.

I understand your point but would say that when someone/a team/whomever decides to work on one thing before another, then by definition the other is a lower priority. I assume those decisions are business-driven, but reserve the right to be disappointed that their apparent priorities (e.g., business and invoicing) don't align with mine (e.g., investment management and reporting) :).

Thank you for the optimism and suggested solutions. Re-creating the reporting criteria each time isn't very inviting tbh, but hopefully I can figure out some workarounds either using QMac or other solutions. I'm still shocked it's not there to begin with (I assumed I was missing something the first couple times I looked!).

You might want to consider installing a VM software on the Mac and running Windows on it. Then you can continue using QWin just like you are used to. There are actually quite a few people who made the switch from Windows to Macs but they didn't want to give up some of the features and functionality that QWin has but QMac does not yet have.

Parallels is perhaps the best performing and most popular of the VM softwares but I understand there are others that are free or much lower cost than Parallels. I can't speak to which one(s) work well with QWin on Macs but perhaps some of the QMac users will provide their insights on this. I've actually been doing this for a bit now but have been frustrated with the performance and wanted to give the native Mac experience a concerted effort. I've been using VMware Fusion but yeah, if anyone has suggestions on specific tools / configuration tricks to enhance performance, I'm all ears. Although FWIW I wouldn't be surprised if my old and bloated QWin QDF file was a major contributor to the performance issues (no such issues with that data in QMac, though).

Technically, I guess that's right. I'm saying that when they marked about a dozen feature requests as "Planned" two years ago, I believe they expected to have made more progress on those features than they actually have. Senior Quicken management in some cases may redirect the roadmap the development team charted — giving a green light to develop the business product sucked up a significant amount of development resources over the past two years. And that points at another issue: certain features may be estimated/budgeted for 'x' amount of development time but end up requiring 1.5x or 2x — thus bumping other planned features further into the future.

I'm with you there! The re-written "modern" Quicken Mac is now 11 years old, and it's hard to understand how investment reports has not yet ascended to the top of the priority list yet. As someone who has closely followed the evolution of Quicken Mac, I do that I think we will get this functionality at some point, even though the waiting can be extremely frustrating.
