Portfolio Value & Account Balance Reports show incorrect amount

Hi, Windows PC on Quicken Classic, with long term error I am only now trying to resolve.

A single investment account in my register is fully reconciled with the Fin Inst for many years but specifically since 7/31/2024. Exact same securities as online brokerage with exact same qty and quote price for each security, and the cash balance is exactly the same. So 100% the same to brokerage statement every month since then to date..

The Quicken Portfolio Value Report for this account as of 7/31/2024 is exactly the same (good). However it then differs until present due to 2 of the 8 stock holdings (Apple and Meta) showing lower month end values ($30 - $90 lower) than the account holdings view referenced above. One other stock (Amazon) shows a $1750 higher value for 12/31/2024 but all other months agree with account holdings.

Additionally, the Quicken Account Balance Report shows an amount that differs from the Account holdings view and brokerage statements month end holdings total value, by a range of 3c more a year ago to $4,200 less last month end.

I have consistently updated prices for all holdings and also gone into the 3 specific stocks causing the errors and checked the price history to confirm it is exactly as per the account holdings view and brokerage statement for each month end date, which they are.

So I cannot find any discrepancies that would be causing these 3 stocks to be causing errors in my Quicken Portfolio Value Report and my Quicken Account Balance Report.

Any insights or guidance would be hugely appreciated. Sharing a screenshot of my Excel reconciliation / error shooting attempts with rows for stocks without any issues hidden. Happy to share a data view privately if anyone can help. Thanks.

Ken

    Hello @Ken A,

Thanks for sharing all the details, and I can see how frustrating this must be—especially since your register is fully reconciled and everything seems correct there.

Before we look deeper into potential data issues, there are a few things we’ll want to verify first:

    1. Are you running a new report or a saved report? Please make sure it’s a new one.
    2. Are there any placeholders that need to be resolved?
    3. Is the report being run for only the time frame you mentioned?

If all of the above are correct and the report still shows different numbers than the register, the next step will be to try some advanced data file troubleshooting, as this may indicate a data file issue for which I recommend reviewing this support article.

    Thank you!

Prior to 07/31/24, had you been trading in and out of those three securities? I have seen Quicken on a rare occasion keep value in a security even though the share quantity was 0. Given the varied values over the time period, I doubt that is the issue but it would still be nice to know.

In a similar direction you might try:

From the account transaction list, Ctrl-z to recalculate the register. That might clear up a wayward transaction.

File validate and repair with the rebuild lots option selected may also clear the issue.

    Hi @Quicken Anja,

Thank you for your response. Based on comments from @q_lurker I did recalculate the register. It did cause my Account Balance Report to update and improve (posted below). While still not correct, it is at least in sync (within 1c) of my Portfolio Value Report.

    1. Yes I run a new report each time on this problem.
    2. No there are no placeholders I am aware of.
    3. Not sure on this one …
      1. For Portfolio Value Report it does not provide exact date only period to x, I am using a view that gives me monthly as of EoM dates and values for the one account only
      2. For the Account Balances Report it is range bound to 8/1/24 to date with a monthly (EoM) interval, and also limited to the one account only.

I will try the advanced data file troubleshooting you recommend by reviewing this support article. That will have to wait until after a trip.

    Thanks, Ken

    Hi @q_lurker,

Thanks for your response. I had not been trading in and out of these. Just initial purchase and reinvested Div.

I did recalculate the register as you suggested and it caused the Account Balances report to match the Portfolio Value Report, but unfortunately both of those still differ form the correct Account Holdings view as reconciled with my brokerage statements.

I also did the file validate and repair with the rebuild lots option selected, but it did not make any difference although it found and fixed a few unrelated issues.

@Ken A that one penny difference that you cite can easily be explained by Q using standard 5/4 rounding while some brokerages (notably Fidelity Investments, my broker) truncate fractional pennies.

When that difference impacts multiple securities in an account (I hold mostly funds) the account total might be off by a nickel or so.

As long as the difference is within that nickel boundary, I just ignore it.

@NotACPA that makes sense and I agree on just accepting the rounding error.

I am now trying to resolve the $45 - $170 difference between the Account Holdings and Brokerage Statements (same amounts) vs the Q Portfolio Value Report and Q Account Balance Report (same amounts, but $45 - $170 less).
