Auto categorize rules

I would like all of my payees containing the string (for example) "DONATE_HERE" to be categorized as "Donations," but I don't want the payee name (which could be "DONATE_HERE_candidate1", "DONATE_HERE_candidate2", etc.) changed at all. And, because these payee names can vary frequently, depending on who I'm donating to, I don't want to have to set up and manage memorized payees. Please add the capability to create a "categorization rule" for downloaded transactions that lets me detect all downloaded transactions with a Payee name that (for example) contains a specific string, and auto-apply a specific category (and, if you want to be wonderful, alternately a TAG, as well) to that downloaded transaction when it is accepted.
@EmKay I can see how this could be useful.
I think it could be implemented by adding a "Use downloaded payee name" option to the Memorized Payee List. That way you could use standard Renaming Rules to select the payee to process and the Category and Tag if you want would be applied per the MPL entry, but the original downloaded payee would be entered in the transaction's Payee field.
Hello @EmKay,
Thank you for your suggestion!
I combined your idea with this existing one.
Thank you!
The use case is to be able assign categories based on the payee’s name without renaming the payee but still use the same rule and category.
Examples:
Donations from John Donations from Tim Donations from Sue Donations from Jane
All need to be categorized as Donations, it is important that the name of the person doesn’t get removed, and that all future “Donations from “ transactions are also categorized as Donations without having to do it for every new name.
This would be very helpful. I have upvoted it!
@Chris_QPW Before it was edited, I saw your comment about how this is different than the issue it was merged into, and I appreciate it. Your explanation of my issue/request was better than mine!
Just wondering … would it be helpful and/or useful to use a common Payee Name, e.g., "Donations made" or "Donations received" and enter the name in the Memo field?
In that case, there'd be just one entry in the Memorized Payee List instead of one per payee name.
The whole problem is that @EmKay would like to retain the people's names.
