Able to change reconciled transaction without warning

Discovered today, and just reported through the Help > Report a Problem system, shortly after noon PST.

Quicken Premier Windows, Version R64.35, build 27.1.64.35, current subscription, Windows 10 Enterprise

Given a transfer transaction, such as payment from a checking account to a credit card account, If one side of that transaction is reconciled, and you try to change the value of the payment, you get a pop-up warning asking if you really want to change the reconciled record. Good.

But if you change the value of the other side of that transaction, which is not yet reconciled, Quicken very obligingly changes the value of the not-reconciled transaction, AND changes the value of the corresponding reconciled transaction without warning.

Screenshot 1 – “PayPal Bob” account, downloaded and reconciled 12/3 transactions.

PayPal funding is from credit card ending 4184. That charge has not yet posted/downloaded from BofA. Screenshot 2 shows it not reconciled.

Value of the highlighted transaction is $72.70. Screenshot 3 shows an attempt to change that value on the PayPal register. We get the reconciled transaction warning. I click No, and the value returns to $72.70.

Screenshot 4: I change the value on the BofA side of the transfer to $77.77. I have not yet pressed Enter nor click Save.

I click the Save button on that transaction. I get no pop-up warning at all, and the Charge changes to $77.77, Screenshot 5.

Return to the PayPal side, and the PayPal side of this transfer now reads $77.77, and is still Reconciled, even though the value is wrong. Screenshot 6.

On the PayPal side, I now correct the amount back to $72.70, and I get the “are you sure” pop-up. Screenshot 7. I confirm Yes, and both sides of the transaction are back to the correct value.

Based on how Quicken handles transfer transactions, I believe what you’re seeing is expected behavior by design, but I am reaching out internally to confirm.

Transfer transactions are treated as a single, linked transaction across two accounts. When either side of the transfer is edited, Quicken keeps both sides in sync to preserve the relationship between the accounts. The confirmation warning is triggered based on which register is being edited. When you attempt to change the reconciled side directly, Quicken prompts you to confirm the change. However, when the edit is made from the non-reconciled side, Quicken assumes that transaction is still flexible and applies the change to the linked transaction, which results in the reconciled side being updated as well—without triggering a second warning.

That said, your concern about a reconciled transaction being altered without an explicit warning is completely valid, especially from a reconciliation and audit perspective. Since you’ve already submitted a problem report, I’ll follow up internally to confirm whether this behavior is fully intentional, an oversight, or if additional safeguards should be considered.

We’ve confirmed that the behavior you described is currently working as designed due to how linked transfer transactions are handled in Quicken.

That said, we agree that having a reconciled transaction change without an explicit warning—when the edit is made from the non-reconciled side—can be confusing and undesirable from a reconciliation standpoint. So, we’ve gone ahead and submitted a ticket to our development team asking them to consider modifying this behavior by adding a confirmation warning in this scenario.

While we can’t guarantee if or when a change might be implemented, we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.
