Deactivation/Reactivation did not fix the problem. Can I close an account and open a replacement.

I am a Windows 11 user with a current Quicken Desktop version. I have two Fidelity Education 529 accounts for kids that seem to be corrupted with each other when downloads are recorded by Quicken. Can I change these accounts to a zero balance, and then open corresponding new accounts, each with a new summary starting balance? For the two accounts in question, each acct has only one security in it. The CUSIP #'s for the securities, per Fidelity, are different. But when I try to download/update the accounts, they both use the same CUSIP. I have deactivated each account at least three times in order to correct the CUSIPs. Then when I reactivate and do the download, they both invariably use the same CUSIP, which depends in some way on the order in which I deactivated them. So at least one account is misstated. I would like to use a journal entry to change each account in Quicken to a zero balance. Subsequently, I would close each account in Quicken. The next action would to be to open two new Quicken accounts. Beginning balance would be summarized data I saved from the recently closed accounts. I would do nothing to the official Fidelity Website that supplies the data.

"I have deactivated each account at least three times in order to correct the CUSIPs. Then when I reactivate and do the download, they both invariably use the same CUSIP, which depends in some way on the order in which I deactivated them.

That's not part of the process to get correct CUSIPs. What you do is uncheck the "Matched with online security" box for each security, then, with the next download you should be asked if each security matches an existing security in Quicken, or is new to Quicken. Correctly answering those question should get each security's CUSIP properly stated.

If you decide you want to go to two new Accounts with correct opening balances you could do that too. But you'd want to have the two securities unmatched with an online security before you start the process, and you'll be asked the same questions.

Well, I tried to follow your instructions and it still did not fix both accounts. Here is what I did.

I DID NOT deactivate either account. I did click on the account holder's name on the left side of the screen to get more detailed information, and then I clicked on HOLDINGS button in that resulting screen, and then right clicked on the resulting name screen which held the account owner name, then selected EDIT SECURITY, and put in the correct data. I did UNCHECK the box that said this item was matched to an online security. Then I accepted my entry, and then I performed the same activity on the other security, and then performed the ONE STEP UPDATE. Quicken asked me to validate only one of the two accounts, which I did. It did not ask me to validate the 2nd Security. Both securities in question updated, with both of them using the same CUSIP, so I still have one account misstated. Did I still miss something? Thank you so much for your courteous help.

I not sure I entirely understand the step by step you laid out, but it sounds like you did everything correctly.

That is, you went into each 529 Account, edited the problem security in each of the Accounts to no longer be matched to an online security. So at that point you had two Accounts in your file with each Account having one security - different securities - no longer matched to an online security. Correct?

Then you did a One Step Update.

"Quicken asked me to validate only one of the two accounts," I lose you there. "Validation" is a Quicken process designed to (hopefully) correct errors in the data. So are you saying that Quicken only asked the question "is this security the broker just told me about a new security in your file, or an existing security?" and you didn't get asked that question again?

That sure sounds like Quicken is seeing those two different securities as being the same security.

What are the names of the two securities, and what are their Ticker symbols?
