Improvements to Quicken - Don't default to editing the date column first [Edited]

Hi, I have a recommendation/complaint. I've been using Quicken for over 10 years and there are a couple of things that are very annoying when working on it.

One of them is that every time I select a new record or press enter, by default the date field is selected. So if I'm not paying close attention I change the date by mistake. It would be nice if the behavior was more like Excel, the cell you click is the one that is editable, it doesn't jump to the date first.

Also, Lately Quicken has been very slow, my guess is because I have multiple years worth of data. I recommend you either switch to a true database behind the scenes so transactions are faster, or split the data in multiple yearly files so you only load the one that is in use at a time, instead of all the data.

Are you selecting a new record via CTRL-N? Why don't you just click on the desired field in the blank/empty record at the bottom of the account register.

Re: speed. When I click on an account other than the 1 I'm in, the switch is almost instant. Same if I click on a different record in the same account.

SO, have you tried taking a backup and then Validating your file? Have you tried "Archiving" old investment transactions?

@NotACPA , I have tried the validating more times than I want to admit. It has not help me though. My fairly fast Ryzen 7 cpu takes 5-7 seconds to switch from one account to another. I'll have to try archiving old data…Maybe.

Q. How is this done, and how does it affect calculation of stock performance if the stock is partially in an archived account?

I have been reluctant to completely close accounts because of the Stock Performance calculation.

I'm having the same issues of Quicken being very slow when 1) entering transactions after download, 2) Going to another account, 3) when toggle to another app and then back to quicken, which is mostly the way I use quicken. I do have a large file, 508 KB that I've been using since 1998. I'm on a PC, newer Dell machine. I'm using version R65.29 but this has been going on for a couple of years. I've talked with Quicken and they suggested I archive data which I've done but doesn't help. I'm not interested in creating a new file starting with 2026 but I'm afraid that may be my only option, it's just too slow manage the number of transactions I have in a typical week. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On the original idea, I noticed today that if you click on a given field Quicken does selected that field, so that is already happening that way. When you hit enter though it goes to the new transaction/date and doesn't go straight down like Excel would do. For the use cases of like filling in the categories, of multiple transactions in a row it would be nice if it worked liked Excel, but for compatibility it would probably have to be something like CTRL+Enter.
