Whack share price updates over the weekend

When I do a one step update on a Saturday or Sunday, I get crazy share price updates across different accounts with different brokerages. For example, most recently it updated Microsoft (+$82.21) and Exxon Mobil (-$14.86) in a Schwab account and Lockheed Martin (-$96.66) in an Empower account, among many others, on a Saturday. Obviously, the expected behavior is no update to the share price on a day the market is closed. Upon updating on a day the market was open, the share prices revert back to their actual accurate values. This has been happening for over a month.

I've done the validate/repair option, but to no effect.

Do you keep your Quicken file directly on your local hard drive?
- Is it synced with any cloud service, such as OneDrive, iCloud, or Dropbox?
Was there anything that happened around the same time that this problem started, such as a program/computer update or an unexpected program/computer shutdown?
Did the Validate/Repair find any issues?

To continue troubleshooting for possible file specific issues, please try restoring a backup from before the issue started and test to see if the issue happens in that newly restored file.

@RazorbackRick Is it actually downloading negative share prices, or the numbers you show the gain/loss relative to the previous day?

What edition of Quicken are you running?

If it is Premier and up and you go to Edit > Preferences > Investments, is the Real time Quotes option selected? If so, that could cause the issues you are seeing, because it downloads priced from after hours trading, which are often quite different from the previous day's close.

Hey @Quicken Kristina, I do keep my Quicken file directly on my local hard drive; I don't know of anything that happened around the same time that this problem started; and yes, the Validate/Repair found issues, but none of them seem to be related to this issue.

Also, not really interested in restoring a backup from over a month ago, given all the data I've entered in that time frame. This problem is mostly an annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless. The share prices return to normal the next day the market is open.

Hi @Jim_Harman, downloaded share prices aren't negative, it's the gain/loss relative to the previous close.

Currently running Quicken Classic Deluxe, Version R65.29, Build 27.1.65.29.

As I asked earlier, do you have the "Real time quotes" option enabled? That would explain what you are seeing.

I don't see "Real time quotes" as an option under Edit > Preferences > Investments in the Quicken Classic Deluxe version I'm running.

Deluxe does not support the Real Time Quotes option. That is why I asked earlier what version you were running. However, if you had Premier at one time and enabled that option, it may be stuck on.

Are you downloading transactions from any of these brokerages? If so, the bogus prices may be coming from them.

@Jim_Harman Yes, but all of the downloaded transactions (when there are any) are coming across without error.

It doesn't matter that the downloaded transactions are correct. Whenever you download transactions, you also get share price updates from the broker and sometimes these are incorrect.

It is hard to tell where the prices in your Price History are coming from, but you can do some experiments to find out.

To view the price history for a security, go to Tools > Security List and click on the name of the security to open the Security detail view. Click on More the Edit Price History to view the prices. Generally the entries with High, Low, and Volume data came from Quicken's quote provider and those that are missing that data were entered manually or came from one of your brokers.

Also, on a day when the markets are closed, look at the price history for a problem security before doing any quote updates or One Step Update. There should not be a price for that day. Then go to each online-connected account where you hold the security, click on the gear at the top right, and click on Download transactions. If you see a new incorrect price in the Price History, you have found the culprit.

For example, Lockheed Martin for 1/17/26 (a Saturday) shows the price at $485.77 when the actual close on Friday was $582.43 (down 96.66). High/Low/Volume all zero.

Doing as you suggested regarding going to the online-connected account where I hold the security and downloading transactions, the same incorrect price ($485.77) is listed for today. Again, High/Low/Volume all zero.

I hold many securities across several different unrelated brokerage accounts, all exhibiting this behavior. I find it hard to believe they're all reporting erroneous security prices for all of my holdings on the days the markets are closed.

The incorrect prices are probably from after hours trading, which some brokers supply. Another thing you can try is a relatively new and undocumented security level setting that that will tell Quicken to ignore the prices downloaded from your brokers.

From the Security Detail view of each problem security, click on Edit Details then Other info and check the "Ignore prices from broker download" box. That will prevent quotes for that security from being downloaded from the broker. See this discussion from when this was first introduced for more information
