Find and Replace taking too long

Every month I search all my accounts for cleared transactions, and I use Find/Replace to change the Cleared Status to blank.

It usually takes a bit of time, as it's processing 30-70 transactions.

This month, there's 43 transactions - and it's taking FAR too long. The mouse cursor flickers every now and then, so it looks like it's "working," but I can't minimize or move the dialog - it's just stuck.

I can probably shut down Quicken, but doing that mid-edit scares me a bit.

Has there been a change in the way mass-edits are being done? Anyone else noticing this?

… So it did just finish - but it took significantly longer (with no progress being indicated anywhere) than usual.

For what types of accounts are you doing this?

And why? The customary "end-state" for a transaction would be "Reconciled" not Blank.

For banking/credit card accounts. I have never liked that downloaded transactions are marked as cleared, because I'm paranoid and don't consider them cleared until I clear them. So I set them all to blank and they get reconciled when I actually reconcile the account. Just a personal preference as to how I handle making sure that everything that gets downloaded gets reviewed before I assume it's accurate.

@Quicken Anja My data file is stored locally, in %userprofile%\Quicken. No significant changes to my computer, I did not attempt to troubleshoot because the edits took so long I had to quit Quicken and move onto my other tasks for the day.

Ignore the version info in my (currently outdated) signature line - I'm on R65.29, build 27.1.65.29. (I'll correct my signature)

@emkay, It seems to me that you're misunderstanding banking terminology.

If you manually input a transaction, the CLR column is blank.

When it downloads from your bank (whether previously input or not) it IS cleared … your bank has cleared/posted it.

Whether the transaction has either a blank or the 'c' in the CLR column, you can reconcile it as long as it falls within the as-of date that you specify. If the date values include them, only transactions that are marked as "R" are excluded from reconciliations.

And, you can make sure that they're reviewed by simply turning off the "Automatically add …" functions at the top of the EDIT, Preferences, "Downloaded Transactions" dialog. By doing so, all downloaded transactions will be held for review in a box below the particular account register until you mark them as reviewed.

@NotACPA No, I understand all of this. Again, this is just a personal preference, and it's a "system" I've used for years. (And I don't auto add downloaded transactions, due to the same paranoia previously mentioned.)

This is something that has worked for me for years, and suddenly the find/replace is behaving differently/badly, that's all. It's not about how reconciling works, it's about the speed of find/replace.

That does not really answer @Quicken Anja 's question. We have no idea what %userprofile% resolves to on your system. Please tell us the exact drive letter and path as requested, either in the way asked for by Anja or in the traditional way, like C:\Users\your_username\Documents\Quicken\QDATA.QDF

Is the drive containing your Quicken data file an internal hard drive, an SSD drive or an external USB or network-connected drive?

@UKR See my response. I replied that my data file is local (maybe I shouldn't have assumed that that means the same thing to everyone), and I didn't think it necessary to expound on my %userprofile% location because I didn't think that would every be ANYTHING BUT c:\users\my_username.

But, for you, I will spell both out: My data file is on my internal SSD drive, in the folder C:\USERS\my_username\Quicken.

Thanks, being precise really helps, because it helps us ferret out if MS OneDrive is involved in managing the active Quicken data file. If it does, this may cause data integrity problems … which have been mentioned numerous times here in the Community.

Now on to some more stuff.
Have you performed and data file validation recently, especially if you had Quicken or the entire system crash on you?
It might be a good idea to run a File Backup followed by a Validation and Supervalidation, to clear up any data structure errors within your data file.

Quicken's speed is not determined by its ability to query the data in the database but rather its ability/methods used to render the data into a GUI form.

As the OP has stated, this can be seen by testing the speed at which data can be accessed in the Find/Edit window. Use a Find Any Field Exact 0.27. It will search the entire data base table almost instantly no matter how large the database is. But do not try a Find for something with several thousand matches because while you will see the number of matches almost instantly in the bottom right corner indicating it completed the query and has identified responsive transactions, it may take an hour to render the visible results, during which time Quicken cannot be used to perform other functions.

This seems like something the developers could start with. Fix the inefficient rendering methods used to assemble and display the query data.
