New Field - Investment Strategy

I use multiple strategies in my investment accounts - various options like verticals, in/out, butterflies, futures, etc. Currently, I keep records in a spreadsheet to monitor my status. What I would like to see is a new field for investment transactions where I can input the strategy used. Then I can generate reports based on each strategy. Thus, I won't need to keep a separate spreadsheet and manually keep track of my transactions.

Does the Investing Goal field for securities not meet this need?

From the Security Detail view, click on Edit Details then Other Info. You can define your own goals and use them to subtotal the Portfolio views and to filter and subtotal some of the Investing reports.

Strategies are based upon the executed trade, not the individual security. The same security may be part of multiple strategies.

So if you receive a dividend from a security that is part of multiple strategies, do you (or would you) break that into multiple transactions?

No I would not. I am a member of a couple of investing sites where they use various trade strategies. For example, I trade 0 DTE Butterflies, In/Out Vertical Put or Call spreads, futures on MNQ/NQ with different strategies, long calls or puts, Iron Condors, etc.

I would like to know how I am doing with each strategy. Am I making money or losing. Currently, I keep those trades in a separate Excel spreadsheet. It's time consuming.

If there was a field, Strategy, for each transaction, I could record that as part of the data entry. I then could pull a report based on each strategy. That would save me a lot of time and add a lot of value to Quicken.

@fciani Well, you've got this posted as an Idea, so we'll see what support it gets. It's typically about 50 votes before the Devs pay any attention.

BUT, personally, I don't see this as a high-demand item … so I'll be greatly surprised if it gets those 50 votes.

And, while I wouldn't think it would be difficult to add a "user input" column to an investment account, I don't really see why you can't use the existing Memo field for your "strategy"

That should be "... why you can't use …"

@Jim_Harman Thanks for pointing that out, I've made the correction.

And, to answer my own question, it seems that the only Investing report that includes the Memo field is "Investment Transactions" … but even in that report you can't sort by memo or subtotal by memo.

SO, perhaps, an Idea post to better utilize an existing field would be in order.

OK. I tried the memo field. I think it might work, but there is a problem. I tested it on one transaction and pulled the Investment Income report. With the memo field added, I got the correct _RlzGain. However, when I clicked on the field to view the transaction, I got ALL the _RlzGain transactions. Also, with this method I would need to create a separate report for each strategy. With a distinct field, I can generate one report with values for each strategy.

Or you could export the report to Excel and sort and subtotal it there.

Also note that the Banking transaction report includes investing transactions an can be sorted on the Memo field, in case that helps. If there were a new field, Quicken's reports would also have to display that field and support sorting and subtotaling on it, unless you would still export to Excel for the analysis.

OR, if the memo field could become activated for sub-totaling, then the new column isn't needed.

And I suspect that my version is easier to implement that changing the layout of the database.
