Surprise! Bank account balance way off upon opening software

This morning, I opened Quicken to log some expenditures and to enter income. The balance showing on my Quicken software is off, over $100K off. When I scroll back through my transaction history, I find that Quicken is showing a lot of old deposits but none of the regular expenditure transactions.

I'm running Quicken Classic for Windows, R67.10, build 27.1.67.10

Let me clarify, I'm not doing anything complicated, just household budgeting and account management. I've made no account changes and I do not sync information to or from any online sources. I balanced the account against my bank statement 2 weeks ago. All was good. I do allow Quicken to apply any updates upon opening the software.

This has happened once before. That time, I was in a hurry. I closed the program in disgust while I considered options. I came back to it a few days later and the balance data was correct.

It seems to be an indication of a software update glitch. Before I start a manual process of recreating my Quicken data, I wanted to check to see if anyone else is having a similar experience.

Thank you for responding. The account is not linked to a financial institution. I update manually. The current balance shown is incorrect.

I tried restoring from a back-up from this past week. It was no good. I just tried again from the day I did my last reconciliation. Now it is correct again. I just need to update it with information from the last 3 weeks.

If there is no Reset button, that means there are no filters active in your register. Is the problem account connected to the financial institution, or do you update it manually in your Quicken file? If it's a connected file, which balance is incorrect (Current Balance, Ending Balance, or Online Balance)?

You mentioned that the balance discrepancy may be due to the missing transactions. Have you already tried restoring a backup from before the transactions went missing?

Thank you for the replies. The sort order is correct. I do not have a "Reset" button.

The dates with unusual data behavior run from 1998-2009. For a part of that period, only deposits show. The later part of that period shows deposits and credit card payments. We had the credit card accounts synced for a while.

I tried archiving older data several years ago but found the old data remained. I tried again today using the "Create a Copy or Template" option. I chose a more recent start date with the current date as the end date for my copy. (1/1/2019 to 5/24/2026) When I opened the copied file it still had the old data there.

Every situation is different, so there may be no single solution. If you haven’t done this yet, I recommend confirming that the Sort Order in your account register is set to Date. You can do this by clicking the top of the Date column in your account register. Click the Reset button at the top of the register. This will confirm that there's no filtering in your account register.

If the issue persists, you may have:

Entered a transaction twice
Missed marking an item
Entered a deposit as a payment or a payment as a deposit
A mismatch in the opening balance

One possibility is that your register is sorted or filtered in an unusual way. You might have clicked on something by mistake, or sometimes these settings get changed when Quicken installs an update.

Just below the account name at the top of the register is a line where you can select the transactions to show, just the deposits for example. If there is a green Reset button at the right end of that line, click on it to return to seeing all your transactions.

Or maybe the register is not sorted in the usual order, with the most recent date at the bottom. To the right of the word "Date" in the header, you should see a little blue triangle pointing up. If there is no triangle, click on the word "Date" to go back to sorting the register by date. If the triangle is pointing down, click on it again to put the most recent date at the bottom.
