This should be a simple issue but I guess my 35+ years of experience with Quicken isn't good enough. I've only had QMac for the last 10 months.
There's a couple ways you can enter a Transfer transaction. One is to use the Category field - type the word "Transfer" followed by a colon and then the account name in brackets:
If you want to do it this way, make sure to go into Settings and on the Register tab check the box for "Allow creation of linked transfers using the category field".
The other way is to use the Transfer field to specify the account.
If you don't see the Transfer field you will have to turn it on - press the Columns button in the lower right corner and check the box next to Transfer.
One thing you can't do in Quicken Mac is sell an asset and transfer the proceeds to an external account in a single transaction. Quicken Windows will do that but Quicken Mac will not. You have to have separate Sell and Transfer transactions in Quicken Mac.
@pmgb23 When you say "outside cash account" do you mean one that isn't included in your Q file?
@Jon's reply is how you transfer cash to another account that IS in your Q file.
If it's not in your Q file, you'd need to record it as an expense of some sort.
If it's for an account not being tracked in Quicken, another option is to put the word "Transfer" in the Category column without specifying a destination account. If you run a Category report it will show up in the Transfer section of the report rather than as an expense. I would put something in the Memo/Notes field to indicate where the money went.
AAAHH, since there's no specific "Transfer" field in QWin, that thought never entered my mind.
