BUG REPORT: D.A. Davidson & Co. (17850) – Simple Tracking doubles every holding with Placeholder ent

I believe I have found a reproducible bug in Quicken Classic for Mac.

Environment

Quicken Classic Deluxe for Mac
Version 9.1.1
Financial Institution: D.A. Davidson & Co. (17850)
Investment Tracking: Simple Tracking (Detailed Tracking is not supported by this financial institution)

Problem

When I connect my D.A. Davidson accounts, Quicken initially displays the correct account balances during the account setup process.

However, immediately after the accounts are created, every security in every account is doubled.

For each investment, Quicken creates a child row labeled "Placeholder" that contains the exact same number of shares and the exact same market value as the actual holding.

Example:

ABC Fund          284.622 shares    $7,864.11

   Placeholder    284.622 shares    $7,864.11

The account total then becomes exactly double what D.A. Davidson reports because Quicken appears to be counting both the actual holding and the Placeholder.

Troubleshooting already performed

Deleted every D.A. Davidson account from Quicken.
Created the accounts again from scratch.
The issue occurs every time.
During setup, Quicken always shows the correct balances before the accounts are created.
The duplication only appears after the accounts are added.
This happens in every D.A. Davidson account.
Quicken Support remotely reviewed the issue and was unable to resolve it.

Additional information

Since D.A. Davidson only supports Simple Tracking, there is no transaction register available. The account settings display the following message:

"D.A. Davidson & Co. does not support downloading detailed investment information. If you want to use Detailed Tracking, you must disconnect this account and manually enter your investment transactions."

Because there is no transaction register, there is no way to delete or resolve the Placeholder entries.

Expected Result

The downloaded holdings should exactly match the holdings at D.A. Davidson.

Actual Result

Every holding is duplicated by an identical Placeholder entry, causing the account values to be approximately double the correct value.

I have attached a screenshot showing the duplicate Placeholder rows under every security.

Has anyone else experienced this with D.A. Davidson (17850), or can Quicken Engineering investigate whether this is a bug in the Simple Tracking download process?

It appears that they told you it's a known limitation. Typically, the problem you describe is a result of the way the data is sent to Quicken. When it isn't formatted properly, it can cause issues, such as the double counting that you are seeing.

I also see they recommended you come to the Community to share your feedback as an Idea. An Idea post is different from reporting a bug. Thank you for your response and for reviewing my case.

I may not have explained the issue clearly, so I'd like to clarify.

During the account setup process, Quicken displays the correct account balances for all of my D.A. Davidson accounts. However, after I complete the setup and the accounts are created, every security receives an identical Placeholder row with the same share count and market value, causing every holding to be doubled.

I have deleted the accounts and recreated them multiple times, and the same behavior occurs every time.

Because the balances shown during setup are correct, I'm trying to understand where the duplication is occurring.

Could you clarify whether:

Quicken is receiving duplicate position data from D.A. Davidson, or
Quicken is creating the duplicate Placeholder entries while processing the downloaded positions?

I'm not requesting a new feature or enhancement. I'm trying to determine whether this behavior is an expected limitation of the current D.A. Davidson connection or whether it should be treated as a compatibility issue between Quicken and D.A. Davidson.

Based on the information provided and Support's confirmation that it's a known limitation, the issue appears to be an incompatibility between how the data is sent and how Quicken interprets it.

The placeholders are automatically created by Quicken to account for missing history. Deleting the placeholders would resolve the problem, but with Simple tracking, there is no access to the transaction register to do so. I suspect that's why Support referred you to the Community: to submit an idea post requesting that Quicken add the ability to delete placeholders from accounts that use Simple tracking.
