Quicken Classic Deluxe 2013 - Memorized Transactions

Recently switched to QCD 2013 from QCP 2009 for years on Windows 10. Now on Windows 11.

I just noticed using a remembered transacition with a new date and amount, the TAG does not update in the remembered transaction once I use it again. I dont recall this being a problem in QCP 2009 - I have been using QCD 2013 for about a month after updating to Windows 11.

@Rascal have you tried manually memorizing one of the transactions with the new tag? Either click the transaction and press CTRL M on your keyboard or right click the transaction and click Memorize Transaction in the context menu.

Yes, that worked, but that ,must be a new "feature" in QCD2013. This specific tag changes weekly for me. Never had to re-memorize in QCP2009.

I am under the impression QC 2013 is as far as I can go without a subscripton. Is that correct?

I remember the days of software purchases rather than an ongoing support subscription. I would maybe update once out of 4 or 5 years.

@Rascal you are correct. Q2013 is the last readily usable version that does not require a subscription. Q2014 to Q2017 are also not subscription, but you have to have a working install to get them to work on a new computer.

I don’t recall prior reports of Q2013 having problems with memorizing transactions. So just guessing maybe try standard general fixes, like File | File Operations | Copy followed by File | File Operations | Validate (the copy).

@Rascal the same patch level as was on the working install of Q2017 on the old computer. In case it's not clear, it's not the patch level that is most germane, it is having the currently working install of Q2017 that you can copy the relevant files from.

Not sure if patches for Q2017 are available anywhere.

@Rascal it seems to be hit or miss on getting Q2014 - Q2017 installed on a new computer. One user reported they were able to modify the Quicken.ini file and get a fresh install working (see the notes for the second method in my comment linked above), but many other users were unable to get the fresh install to work. As I have a working install of Q2017 on my Win 10 laptop, I was able to get Q2017 on a new Win 11 laptop using the first method in my comment linked above.

I think the only place to get patches for Q2014 - Q2017 now would be someplace like the internet archive site.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet, BUT, I'm pretty sure that you can't create a brand new data file with QW2014-2017 since the file has to be "registered" along with the program itself since the registration servers no longer exist.

You are best sticking with QW2013 unless you are going to upgrade all the way to subscription.

It seems to me that you started down this path because you ran into a problem and then somehow decided that upgrading would fix the problem that you are having in 2013. I question that assumption. Quicken 2013 was a very long time ago and I could certainly be forgetting a problem from way back then, but one thing that was very true until Quicken went to a subscription is base features like this barely changed in all the years.

And even trying to go to Quicken 2014 to 2017 is a fool's errand. Because of way they tied them to the Quicken ID you are looking at a very fragile setup if you can get it to work at all. This relationship exists in Quicken Subscription too. The only difference is that Intuit sold Quicken and no longer maintains it. The same would be true of Quicken Subscription if Quicken Inc goes out of business.

In my opinion if one is manually entering transactions there isn't anything in the later versions that is worth leaving and your best bet in Quicken 2013 for future use.

As for the problem you are having with tags, I don't believe that there was anything in Quicken 2009 that wasn't in Quicken 2013 as far as memorized payees are concerned. And the "changes automatically" doesn't sound like a feature that has ever been in Quicken, but I can think of one setting combination that might fool one into thinking this, and I can think of something that might have changed between Quicken 2009 and Quicken 2013.

If one has the automatic memorized payee setting on, and they haven't locked the payee Quicken will create a new memorized payee entry for that payee every time you change the tag and enter the transaction. If the new payee entries aren't being created, then I would look to see if the memorized payee is locked or not. If the new memorized payees' entries are being created, it is possible that you expect the last one entered to be the default. What has been the default memorized payee when entering a transaction has varied over the years and so that might be the problem. If it is though, upgrading might not change anything.

I will say something about the idea of creating a new payee entry every week. It seems to me that might cause problems over time. And you might want to state why you are doing that so that maybe someone can suggest a different way to do what you want.

@Chris_QPW there is one improvement between Q2013 and Q2017 that I find worthwhile. The ability to show reminders layered onto the register. You can simulate this by entering reminders and/or transactions ahead of time, but the ease of use of the Show Reminders in Register is very nice.

Just for anyone else interested, here is the full list of improvements Q2013 through Q2017. You may notice, many of the improvements are for online enabled features, none of which will work in these sunsetted versions.

Yes, that is one of my favorites too. I'm not sure if it would be worth it too me though to go through the hassle of an upgrade to Quicken 2017 from Quicken 2013, even though it is academic to me.

A long time ago back when the only way you could use Quicken was only manual entry I stopped because it wasn't worth it to me and only started again when it was possible. So, I just don't fall into this boat.

And the second is because my only use for Quicken 2017 at the time it got obsoleted is for debugging other people's problems in a virtual machine and I got caught with no existing Quicken.ini and my trying the things people suggested didn't work for me.

To be truthful, I have read the OP multiple times and I don't understand exactly what they are doing.

They state they use a MP with a new date & amount and they report that the Tag (which has not be mentioned) is not updated in the MP once they use it again.

I'd test it, but I don't know what sequence of things to do to replicate. One thing i definitely don't do is have "Memorize new payee" checked in Preferences. I only memorize Payees that I really want memorized.

And that is one of the key points. @Rascal does have the automatic memorizing of payee's on. (I also don't have it on so I certainly could be missing something that works differently).

I do know that if you use a memorized payee and don't lock it and change something like the amount, it will create another entry on that memorized payee. Whether it will do that for tags, I don't know I didn't test it and all of my memorized payees are locked.
