Quicken Deluxe Mac Slow!

I have been using Quicken for over 28 years. I have data going back to 1997. It is running slow.. any action or additional transaction takes like 30 seconds before it performs the function.. even reconciling a transaction. I am guessing my file has gotten too big. I cannot, for the life of me, find the archive function to shrink my file. I searched and looked at all the menus.

Some things that I've done in the past that have helped speed up Quicken:

Perform Super Validation two or three times or until it reports no errors.
- While holding CTRL-SHIFT, click on File > Validate and Repair File.
Delete all memorized payees.
Create a copy which reduces file size.
- File > Copy or Backup File > Create a copy or template > Next
- Leave all options as defaulted in order to capture your entire data set.
- It drops my 331 MB file to 327 MB. Not a big space reclamation, but does seem to help with performance.

Thanks for reaching out and for providing the details. With nearly 30 years of transaction history, it’s understandable that you may be wondering whether the size of your Quicken file is contributing to the slowdown you’re experiencing.

Quicken for Mac does not currently have an Archive/Condense feature that automatically removes older transactions while keeping a specific number of years of history in your active file.

However, you can take a similar approach by first creating a complete backup of your current file and then removing older transactions from your working file.

Before making any changes, I recommend the following:

Create a backup of your current file

Go to File > Save a Backup…
Save the backup in a secure location.
This preserves your complete historical data, including your transactions going back to 1997.
If you later need to review older transactions or reports, you’ll still have the backup file available.

Consider removing older transactions from your active file

After creating and verifying your backup, you can remove transactions you no longer need in your day-to-day file.
Before and after making changes, reconcile your accounts and verify that your balances and reports are accurate.

There is also an Idea in the Community requesting this functionality. Our Development team is aware of the request and is working toward adding this feature. However, there is currently no ETA for when it will be available in Quicken.

@Sisco For what it's worth, I have more than 30 years of data in my Quicken data file, and it doesn't run slow like you've described.

Almost always when users report "any action or additional transaction takes like 30 seconds before it performs the function", the culprit turns out to be a report which is open in the background. Please pull down your Window menu to see if there is anything beneath "Sync Errors" on that menu; if so, the one or more items you see there are open windows or reports, which you likely aren't aware of because they are hidden behind the main Quicken window. Close them, and you should see functionality return to normal immediately. Let us know if this is the case.

@MSStateDawg This thread is about Quocken Mac, and you've described thing relating to Quicken Windows. None of the things you mentioned are available or needed in Quicken Mac.
