Please add an automated Quicken Classic for Windows alert that monitors the Lowest Balance Forecast for selected accounts and notifies the user when any account is projected to fall below a user-defined balance threshold (especially $0) within a user-defined number of days (especially 5 days).
This would turn Quicken's existing excellent cash-flow forecasting capability into a proactive cash-management tool rather than requiring users to manually monitor the forecast.
Summary
Please add a new Quicken Classic for Windows alert that automatically monitors the Lowest Balance Forecast for user-selected accounts and notifies the user when an account is projected to reach a negative balance within a configurable number of days.
For example:
Alert me 5 days before any monitored account is forecast to have a negative balance.
This feature would use Quicken's existing Projected Balances / Lowest Balance Forecast calculations and Bill & Income Reminders rather than requiring users to manually inspect the forecast.
Current Problem
Quicken Classic for Windows already provides an excellent Lowest Balance Forecast that allows users to identify when a future transaction, bill, or payment may cause an account to become overdrawn.
However, there is currently no automated alert tied to this forecast.
The user must manually open Quicken and inspect the Projected Balances/Lowest Balance Forecast to discover a potential future negative balance.
This is particularly problematic for users who:
- Have multiple checking or cash accounts
- Use Bill & Income Reminders
- Keep most cash invested in money-market funds or other short-term investments
- Need several days to transfer or liquidate funds
- Have variable credit-card payments or other transactions
- Do not want to maintain unnecessarily large cash balances simply as a safety buffer
The existing balance alerts do not solve this problem because the account may have a perfectly healthy current balance, while Quicken's forecast already knows that the account will become negative several days in the future.
Proposed Feature
Add a new alert condition:
"Lowest Balance Forecast"
Allow the user to configure an alert such as:
Alert me when an account's Lowest Balance Forecast is below $0 within the next 5 days.
The alert should evaluate Quicken's existing projected balance calculations for each selected account.
Example
Today:
September 3
Quicken's forecast shows:
Account | Current Balance | Forecast Low | Date of Low |
|---|
Checking A | $7,500 | -$2,850 | Sep 8 |
Checking B | $4,200 | $1,125 | Sep 10 |
Savings | $25,000 | $25,000 | ā |
Quicken should generate:
š“ Projected Negative Balance Alert
Checking A is projected to reach -$2,850 on September 8, which is 5 days from today.
Please transfer or deposit sufficient funds to avoid a negative balance.
Required Alert Conditions
The feature should allow users to configure:
1. Balance threshold
Examples:
- Below $0
- Below $100
- Below $500
- Custom amount
2. Advance warning period
Examples:
- 1 day
- 2 days
- 3 days
- 5 days
- 7 days
- 14 days
- 30 days
- Custom number of days
3. Accounts to monitor
Allow:
- All eligible accounts
- Selected accounts
- Account groups
For example, a user may want to monitor checking accounts but exclude investment accounts.
Recommended Default Configuration
A useful default would be:
Alert when the Lowest Balance Forecast for any selected account will fall below $0 within the next 5 days.
This should be configurable rather than hard-coded.
Important: Evaluate Each Account Independently
The alert must evaluate each account separately, rather than simply calculating the combined cash position.
For example:
Account | Forecast |
|---|
Checking A | -$2,000 |
Checking B | +$10,000 |
Savings | +$50,000 |
The combined cash position is positive, but Checking A may still incur an overdraft.
Therefore, the alert should trigger for Checking A.
This is especially important for users who maintain separate checking accounts for different purposes.
Use Existing Quicken Forecast Data
The proposed feature should leverage Quicken's existing calculations.
The forecast should incorporate the same information currently used by Quicken's Lowest Balance Forecast, including:
- Current account balance
- Cleared and future transactions
- Bill Reminders
- Income Reminders
- Scheduled transactions
- Transfers
- Other transactions already included in the Projected Balance calculation
There should be no requirement for the user to create additional duplicate reminders solely for this alert.
Alert Notification
The alert should be available through Quicken's existing notification mechanisms.
Possible notification methods:
- Quicken desktop alert
- Alerts Center
- Windows notification
- Email notification, where supported
The alert should contain enough information to immediately understand the problem.
Example notification
Projected Negative Balance ā Action Required
Account: Brokerage Checking
Projected Lowest Balance: -$5,327
Date: September 8
Days Until: 5
Review upcoming transactions and transfer sufficient funds to avoid a negative balance.
Avoid Duplicate Alerts
The alert should not generate a new notification every time Quicken is opened.
Once an alert has been generated for a particular projected shortfall, Quicken should track that alert.
For example:
September 3
Warning: projected -$5,327 on September 8.
If the forecast remains essentially unchanged on September 4, Quicken should not repeatedly generate the same alert unless configured to do so.
However, if the forecast changes materially, Quicken should update or regenerate the warning.
Forecast Changes Should Trigger an Updated Alert
This is particularly important because financial forecasts change frequently.
For example:
September 3
Projected low: -$2,000 on Sep 8
September 4
A new credit-card transaction appears.
The forecast changes to:
Projected low: -$4,500 on Sep 8
Quicken should recognize that the forecast has materially changed and notify the user again.
Optional Advanced Condition
An even more useful implementation would allow:
Alert when the account's lowest projected balance becomes negative AND the negative date is within X days.
This differs from a simple "balance below $0" alert.
The account could currently have:
$8,000
and therefore would not trigger a normal low-balance alert.
But Quicken's forecast may already show:
-$3,000 in 5 days.
That is precisely the situation this feature is intended to detect.
Why Existing Balance Alerts Are Not Sufficient
A conventional minimum-balance alert is based on the current or actual balance.
That means it might work like:
Alert me when Checking falls below $500.
But this does not detect:
Checking currently has $8,000, but Quicken forecasts -$3,000 five days from now.
The proposed feature is therefore fundamentally different:
Existing alert
Current balance ā threshold
Proposed alert
Future projected balance ā threshold + time horizon
User Value
This feature would provide a significant improvement to Quicken's cash-flow management capabilities.
It would allow users to:
- Avoid overdrafts
- Avoid rejected ACH payments
- Avoid bounced checks
- Avoid unnecessary idle cash
- Keep more money invested
- Identify upcoming cash shortages early
- Manage multiple checking accounts more efficiently
- Use Quicken's existing forecasting capability proactively
It would also make the existing Lowest Balance Forecast considerably more useful because users would no longer have to remember to manually inspect it every day.
Example Real-World Use Case
A user maintains a brokerage checking account and keeps excess cash in a Treasury money-market fund.
The checking account currently has:
$12,000
Quicken's forecast shows:
-$4,000 on September 8
The user needs approximately 1ā2 business days to liquidate the money-market position and transfer the proceeds.
Without an automated alert, the user must remember to manually inspect Quicken's forecast every day.
With the proposed feature:
September 3
š“ Projected Negative Balance
Brokerage Checking
Projected balance: -$4,000
Date: September 8
Warning period: 5 days
The user has sufficient time to take corrective action.
Suggested User Interface
A new option could be added under:
Edit ā Preferences ā Alerts & Messages
or the existing Alerts Center.
For example:
Create Alert
Alert Type:
ā Lowest Balance Forecast
Monitor:
ā All selected checking accounts
Condition:
Lowest projected balance is:
Below $ 0
Within:
5 days
Notify me by:
ā Quicken Alert
ā Windows Notification
ā Email
Optional Enhancements
Future versions could provide additional conditions such as:
Low projected balance
Alert if projected balance falls below $1,000 within 7 days.
Negative projected balance
Alert if projected balance falls below $0 within 5 days.
Large projected drop
Alert if projected balance decreases by more than $5,000 within 7 days.
Multiple-account cash transfer suggestion
If Quicken detects:
Checking A: -$3,000
and
Checking B: +$15,000
it could optionally suggest:
"Consider transferring approximately $3,000 from another monitored account."
This would be an enhancement, not a requirement for the initial feature.
Priority
High
This feature would leverage functionality that Quicken already has rather than requiring a new forecasting engine.
The primary development requirement is to expose the existing Lowest Balance Forecast as an automated alert condition with a configurable advance-warning period.
