Bug saving a backup to a Cryptomater disk

I use Cryptomator to make sure my Quicken data is encrypted. Up until recently, I was able to make backups to these Cryptomator disks without any issue.

Recently, when I tried to do that, I get an error "FILENAME couldn't be copied because you don't have permission to access FOLDER."

Everything else works fine, I can open, edit, and save my Quicken file. Just not any backups. This is a problem because when Quicken upgrades it first tries to make a backup copy and of course this now fails. So what I have to do is temporarily move my Quicken file to my local drive, go through the backup process, then move it back.

I started a chat with support but they refused to enter a bug ticket. Is anyone else seeing this issue?

Since Quicken Mac offers you a checkbox to enable file encryption, I don't know why you're using a separate disk to achieve encryption. It can already be done by Quicken using macOS built-in encryption tools. And if you enable encryption in Quicken, then backups — to whatever local or cloud storage service you select, are also encrypted. (With those features built-in, I can't imagine Quicken would devote any resources to testing with a third-party open source product like Cryptomator.)

In addition, Cryptomater is a cloud-based encrypted disk and Quicken doesn't always work well with cloud storage. So you really shouldn't be saving your Quicken file to Cryptomater anyway. I agree with @jacobs that you should just enable Quicken's setting for encrypting your file, and suggest you store the file on a local disk. If you insist on using third party encryption it needs to not be cloud based.

I assume you mean by setting a password? How can I see what type of encryption is being used? How can I be sure that it is secure? With Cryptomater, which is open source, I can verify that in the code.

Cryptomater is not cloud based unless you want it to be, it uses local files to simulate a disk for an app like Quicken to use. I do not use it as a cloud based service.

3. If Quicken works normally for everything else BUT backups, why is that not considered a bug?

I can use quicken just fine with Cryptomater, as long as I don't do backups. I could understand if Quicken for some reason was incompatible with Cryptomater. But it's not, just the backup functionality is not working. So to be this is a bug not a "works as intended" thing.

Regarding Quicken Mac encryption, once you set a password you can additionally select to encrypt the file. Unless I'm mistaken setting a password by itself doesn't do anything to protect the file contents other than stopping Quicken from opening the file until the correct password is provided - a third party tool capable of reading SQLite files could still access it. Based on what developers have said in the past the encryption is done by Mac OS and is not something Quicken implemented themselves.

- Did it coincide with a program or computer update?
Could the file name length or special characters be causing the issue?
- If you haven't already done so, please try using a short filename with no special characters
If you use other services, have you tested whether you can backup to other services?
If you have multiple files that you backup, does this happen with all of them?

Have you contacted Cryptomater about this problem? It's possible that an update on their end is causing a compatibility issue.

Quicken backups work fine. To a local folder. To a folder on a cloud service. The only reported problem with backups that I've heard of is with your selected open source program.

It started 2 or so months ago. I can't remember any software changes including Quicken. But there may have been it was just a while ago. I have since updated Quicken, Cryptomater, and FUSE (which Cryptomater uses to simulate a disk) but nothing has helped.

Could the file name length or special characters be causing the issue?
- If you haven't already done so, please try using a short filename with no special characters

I have tried that with a short file name, "test", and it still happens.

If you use other services, have you tested whether you can backup to other services?

Not sure what other services you mean?

If you have multiple files that you backup, does this happen with all of them?

If you mean multiple Quicken files, I actually created a brand new test Quicken file to help you guys reproduce and was able to with that file.

Have you contacted Cryptomater about this problem? It's possible that an update on their end is causing a compatibility issue.

I'm not sure what I would tell them? Quicken can save files no problem unless it is trying to save a backup? Not sure how they would even go about troubleshooting that on their side?

Since the specific file and filename don't seem to matter, this may be an issue with how Quicken interacts with the FUSE drive. Since this started recently, it could be due to a change/update on either side.

Other services include services like Dropbox, iCloud, and OneDrive. The goal is to confirm whether this happens when backing up to any cloud service or if the issue is specific to Cryptomater. Note: When testing with these services, you may want to use the brand-new test file.
