How to change the starting cash balance on an investment account for reconciliation?

I am starting to reconcile an investment account that was opened in early March, 2026.

Quicken Classic for Windows

When I start reconciling and enter 0.00 for the opening balance, Quicken is somehow calculating that the opening balance should be $1,326.93, although there are no transactions in the account before March 27.

Can someone explain how to change the opening balance on the account to $0.00?

I see a much bigger issue than the $1326.93 opening balance issue is and that I think really should be addressed first:  The Difference amount of $103,667.51.  When the cash in an account is in balance it should always show Difference of $0.00.

On 3/27 there was a deposit to the account of $102,278.23.  And on 3/31 there was a buy of Schwab Gov't Money…a MMF (money market fund)…that should have decreased the ending cash balance by $102,278.23 so that the net is $0.00.

Schwab allows for this particular MMF to be reported in Quicken as either shares or as Cash Balance, but it cannot be showing both.  I suspect that this account in Quicken is reporting the $102,278.23 as both MMF shares and as Cash Balance.  This results in the following issue:  $102,278.23 cash deposit - $102,278.23 MMF shares purchase + $102,278.23 cash balance resulting in a total difference of $102,278.23.

If this apparent conflict is not corrected, fixing the Opening Balance transaction (if that is really something that should be or needs to be fixed) will not allow Quicken to reconcile the account because the cash balance will still not be correct.

So, before proceeding to correct this issue the question needs to be asked:  How do you want this MMF reported in Quicken….as MMF shares or as Cash Balance?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question.  It is all a matter or personal preference.  Some (myself included) prefer to see the cash value of the MMF shown in the Cash Balance instead of as shares so they can easily see how much money they can quickly invest or transfer out of the account without needing to place a security sell order.  Others prefer to see the shares instead of the cash because that better matches what the online brokerage shows for holdings.

Let us know your preference on this and then we can start troubleshooting to get this Difference issue resolved.

Once that is resolved it will make it easier to troubleshoot whatever remaining Cash Balance, Opening Balance or account balance issue remains.

I cannot remember if it is my first time to reconcile the account or not, but given the $1326.93 that is appearing, I must have stupidly skipped the opening balance month and started reconciling in a later month.

Is there a fix to change the $1326.93 to zero and start reconciling from the opening balance month?
