Opening Balance in Check Register Suddenly Disappeared

This has happened several times over the years and it always takes me a while to figure out why my checkbook balance is suddenly off, and then I remember the opening balance issue. That balance is deleted by Quicken so altering your current balance.

The thing I was doing today was deleting transactions in another bank check register that had inadvertently been placed there when editing a reminder transaction that I was trying to enter into my register. I only mention this is case it helps someone isolate a cause; of course it could have been something else!

@donotemailhere989 I found that if you delete the original Opening Balance transaction that was created when you first created the account and replace it with a new Opening Balance transaction, that will fix the issues. The new Opening Balance transaction will not disappear or change.

I, personally, have never seen the Opening Balance transaction get deleted when changing or reauthorizing the connection method of the account. What happens is that the dollar amount of that transaction sometimes gets changed to either nothing or to some other number.

What I have done is to enter and save the correct Opening Balance transaction dollar amount into the Memo field. By doing this it makes is very easy to know when the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount has been changed and to know what it needs to be changed to so it will be correct, again.

Since the issue is that the original opening balance disappears, and then I have to replace it, I have already in the past created a new one in the past. Yet it still disappeared today, so for me at least this is not a solution.

I create the opening balance by inserting the appropriate transaction at the start of the register. Is there any other way?

The amount of that Opening Balance transaction will SOMETIMES (it's an intermittent bug) get changes if you change the download method (say, Direct Connect to Express Web Connect, or EWC to Web connect, or any other such change) OR if you RESET the account, or one or 2 other infrequent actions.

There's no known remedy, Only Q can fix this, but since it's intermittent it's a tough one. The only work-around is to store the CORRECT amount in the Memo field of the OB transaction so that IF/When it happens, you can go to that transaction and easily spot that it happened and know what the correct amount should be.

@Boatnmaniac. In my case the transaction disappears but adding to the Memo field of the first (actually second when the opening balance is restored) is what I am now doing.
