This was first reported in April 2023, and it is still an issue (10/05/2026)!
@William Crawford Buy and Sell transactions normally do not use categories, regardless of whether the commission is $0.00 or some other amount. Before concluding this is a bug, I'd want to see exactly where "Uncategorized" is appearing. Is it on the investment transaction itself, in a linked cash account, or in a report?
The referenced 2023 discussion:
@mshiggins thanks for posting this.
@William Crawford I have been able to reproduce this behavior in several different reports. I agree it is a bug/issue with the reporting engine.
Have you sent a "Report a problem" to Quicken Support? That is the only effective way to get it on the radar.
Help→Report a problem…
I experimented briefly with this, with mixed results.
Posting detailed steps to reproduce the problem in this discussion, including the names of the reports affected and preferably with screen shots, would also help it to gain traction.
Note that some reports omit transactions or Categories that have a zero amount, which can add confusion to this issue.
@Jim_Harman I have found this bug in every summary-type report (investment and banking) that includes bought or sold transactions. In some of these reports, you cannot explicitly add the bought or sold action, but just by adding an investment account, adds the bought or sold transactions.
Hello @William Crawford & @Sceptic,
Thank you for letting us know you're seeing this issue. I can't replicate the issue in my file. Does this happen with a specific type of investment account? Does it happen only with downloaded/imported transactions? Do you see this happen with all Buy/Sell transactions, or is it more random?
I tested with manually entered Buy and Sell transactions in a brokerage account and the Itemized Categories report.
I look forward to your response!
@Quicken Kristina run any summary type report that you can include an investment account and has buys or sales during the time period. An example is the Itemized Category report that the OP is using. The key is to select a time period that includes buys or sales of securities. When the report is produced you will see a category named "Uncategorized" at the very top of the Expenses section. The category total is zero. When you drill down to the actual transactions, you will see the Bought and Sold transactions. These transactions would never have a category, thus should never show on the report. It has been determined that the Commissions field is causing the transactions to show in the report, even though the commission amount is zero.
If the zero is replaced by another number other than zero, the transaction drops of the report. Even when the number is then changed back to zero, the transaction still does not show on the report.
Thank you for your reply,
I created a couple of buy transactions for today with a $0 Commission.
Then I ran the Itemized Categories report and set the date range to week-to-date.
I tried using yesterday's date and tried Sell transactions, but those didn't trigger the issue either.
Is there a specific security or account type that triggers this behavior?
Thank you!
@Quicken Kristina another better report to try is the Banking Summary Report. The key again is to select an investment account with buys and sells during the time period. That report will definitely produce a list of buys & sells under "Uncategorized".
After looking that the security transactions under "Uncategorized" in the Itemized Category report, I noticed that they were all sells that didn't have a gain or loss to them. In other words, they were all securities that are priced at 1.00. You might want to test that to see if you then get the sells to show up.
When I tested these reports this morning, I saw that they produced buys or sells under the "Uncategorized category, but I didn't look closely enough at them to see what actually was pulling. Now I see that Itemized Category report pulls a subset of securities. The rest pull all securities with buys or sells.
@Quicken Kristina here is an example of the "Uncategorized" category from the Banking Summary Report showing the transaction details.
@Quicken Kristina here is another example from the Cash Flow report -
Here is an example from the Income/Expense by Category report
Here is the detail from the Itemized Categories report. This is the only report I found so far, that only pulls sales for securities prices at 1.00
If you need more examples I can provide them.
@Quicken Kristina there might be a difference between IRA or tax deferred accounts vs. taxable brokerage accounts. It seems like this issue only occurs when creating reports from my IRA accounts. The reports created from my taxable brokerage account don't show this issue.
@Quicken Kristina I just realized that I don't use the Bought or Sold transactions in my taxable brokerage account, only BoughtX or SoldX, so that might be the difference as well.
Sorry for giving you this information piecemeal. I will stop for now and wait for your response. Thanks!
Just to be clear, the screenshots @Sceptic shows are what you see when you double click on the 0.00 Uncategorized amount in the main report.
I also see these uncategorized transactions only on sales of money market funds. If I edit one of those transactions so that the sale price is $1.01 per share, the transaction produces realized gain with a Category of _RlzdGain and it no longer appears as Uncategorized.
Conclusion: The Sold transactions only appear as Uncategorized if the realized gain is zero. This definitely seems to be a bug. It would make much more sense if they kept the _RlzdGain Category even if it is zero.
Thank you for your replies,
I was able to replicate the issue with sell transactions, but I haven't had any luck replicating it with buy transactions. The closest I can get with the buy transactions is that the Banking Summary Report shows Uncategorized, but there are no transactions when drilling down.
I forwarded this issue to the proper channels for further investigation and resolution. Since I can't fully replicate the issue, please go to Help>Report a Problem and send a problem report with log files attached.
Note: Problem reports allow a maximum of 10 attachments. If you need to send more than 10, you can unselect log files with OLD in their filename, or you can send a second problem report with the additional attachments.
Please let me know once you've submitted a problem report!

@Jim_Harman that seems to be only true for the Itemized Categories Report. The other screenshots I provided are from other reports that show Buys and Sells for all securities.
The Itemized Categories Report is the only one I found so far that shows only Sold transactions with no gain or loss.
@Quicken Kristina are you asking me to submit a report? If so, do I need to attach these screen prints again? Or can I somehow just attach this thread?
There's no need to attach the screenshots to the problem report. The discussion is already attached to the ticket.
@Quicken Kristina report sent to Quicken Support
Thank you for sending the problem report!
It will help our teams investigate the issue.

@Quicken Kristina the other reason why you are unable to get a Bought transaction to show up under the "Uncategorized" category is the difference between an investment transaction that was input manually vs. one that was downloaded. I say that because I have noticed that when a buy or sell is downloaded and the component pieces (shares, Price, cost) do not add up mathematically, Quicken will put a plug for the difference in the Commission field. That tells me that the Commission field may be a calculated or a "catch-all" field. This may be why the Commission field plays a part in the Bought and Sold transactions showing up under "Uncategorized" in reports. The field looks like it empty, or zero, but it really isn't.
It's really not a big issue in my opinion. But for report programming consistency, I think it should be looked at.
@William Crawford I apologize for taking over your thread. But the important thing is that the issue has been acknowledged and submitted to Quicken Support.
@Quicken Kristina I have been looking at this issue in detail, and it seem to be more complicated than it looks. There are several different reports that show this "Uncategorized" category, but the underlying transactions (Bought, Sold) are different depending on what report you run. Also whether or not the "Commission" field has any effect on the transaction depends on the details of the transaction. So far, the Sold transactions with no gain or loss, in the Itemized Categories report, are the only ones that seem to be affected by the Commission field.
These Bought and Sold transactions do not belong in these reports. I have a feeling they were missed because they are all zero transactions that have no impact on the report totals and you don't see them unless you drill down to the transaction details.
I think if there is an "Uncategorized" category in any banking reports that contains only zero amount Bought or Sold transactions, it should be considered an error in the reporting engine. Almost every banking summary-type report I have run contain this "Uncategorized" category.
At this point, I will pause my investigating. If Quicken Support needs more information or provides feedback, I will gladly resume investigating.
Thank you for the additional information,
I added it to the ticket.
