Combining "_int" and "Interest" entries

Interest income from stocks and bonds in an account are entered as "_int" with no ability to categorize, whereas interest from a security in a savings account can be categorized as, say, to "Interest", but no "_inc" category (or any category available). Is there a way to be consistent and categorize all interest (and dividends, etc) the same way, and therefore lump them together? Q17, W10

Personally I never try to make them the same, but you can use _IntInc, which is used in the security transactions.  On the category list select the Show hidden categories, or just type in _IntInc.

And BTW you can change category for the interest income of securities, it just isn't the default, so you would end up manually changing all the transactions.  The key is to put the amount in the Misc field.

Thanks. One question: How would the change to the Misc field show up in reports?

Under the category that you assigned on the left.

Thanks. One question: How would the change to the Misc field show up in reports?

Note you aren't changing the "Misc field", you are changing the category.
The Misc field above, just lets the user select the category they want instead of using one of the built in ones that would be used for Dividend, Interest, ...

So you are in fact asking how do I change the category on existing transactions (which show up in the reports).

One way is to use the reports.  Say you have brought up a banking -> transaction report.  You can filter that down to just the transactions you are interested in, and then select the first transaction and then hold down Shift and click on the last transaction to select the range of transactions.  You can then select Edit and recategorize the transactions.  Note you can't select any split transactions with this method.

The second way is to go to a banking register and select Ctrl+F.
This will allow you to search for/select the transactions with the category you want changed.  And then you can select Edit Transactions to change the category for these transactions.  Note you can select multiple transaction my clicking and dragging.
