Capital improvements on duplex

I rent one unit in a duplex and live in the other. Do skylights count toward capital improvements since they are part of the building even though the rental unit is on the first floor and one cannot see the skylights from there?

You might want to ask a qualified tax advisor about this or check

I don't think anybody around here is qualified to give tax advice.

I would think that they'd add to the cost basis of your residential portion and have nothing to do with the rental unit ... and thus have nothing to do with your taxes until such time as you sell the building.
