I generally like the QuickFill mechanism, but I get a number of transactions that have a common beginning but then vary, often by containing a date for the transaction. Is there a way to write a QuickFill rules that effectively ignores the varying part of the entry?

I'm not sure what you mean by transactions that "have a common beginning but then vary, often by containing a date for the transaction." Do you mean the Payee names start the same but include other text? If so, you'll want to create a Renaming Rule (not a QuickFill Rule) to try to make a common Payee.
For instance, let's say you bank at ABC Bank, and your transactions come in as:
"ABC Bank #4031 Anytown"
"ABC Bank #5432 Sometown"
You can create a Renaming Rule:
If Statement Name contains "ABC Bank"
Set Payee Name to "ABC Bank"
The next time a transaction comes in as "ABC Bank #4031 Anytown", the Payee name will be changed to "ABC Bank".
