What’s the best way to handle preferred stock shares, as a stock or as a bond?

I currently have them entered as bonds, but the price doesn’t update. However, the stock symbol is not recognized.

What stock?  And what symbol are you using?
Also, which QMac product are you running and what  BUILD of of that product?  Do Quicken, About Quicken for this info.
And, no stock symbol will be recognized for a bond.

You should enter as a stock
    Preferred shared have "tricky" symbols
in Quicken go to Windows (tool bar) and Security
and enter the name of the security, it should offer you the right symbol used by Quicken

They are stocks but finding the ticker symbol for preferred can be tricky. Search internet for symbols and try different combinations such as t.p t-t etc... If you find the ticket it will track properly.
