Installing 2009 - Product Key Validation Fails - have New Zealand variant of Quicken

Hi there. Installing 2009 on Windows 10. When I get to the stage where it validates my Product Key, the app fails causing an Error and stops. I have had this loaded in Windows 10 before .... After this it has trouble opening the Data Files too.

Any help succeeding would be gratefully received. Please do not advise updating to a newer version. That is obvious and I do not wish to.

I know it has been done successfully by some people .... please help :-)

    2009?  You should at least try to convert to the 2013 version since you don’t use any online services or download transactions now.  Then it should run on newer versions of Windows.  Starting in 2014 they instituted an ID password to get into your own data. I’m staying on 2013.


    2013 runs on Windows 10.  You can download 2013 Deluxe for free using this how to convert article.  It’s under Converting from Quicken 2004-2009.

    And FYI - If your Quicken was before 2010 you should have several files making up the data.

    The main data file ends in .QDF.  All Quicken versions prior to QW2010 store your data in a series of files all sharing the same filename but with different extensions like  - .QDF .IDX, .QEL, .QPH  and all 4 of those files were rolled into a single-file .QDF starting in 2010. 

    I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

    Found an old note I had........
    If all else fails and you get stuck on a Registration window, you can try the following to bypass registration:

    Start or restart Quicken. Do not start a One Step Update or any other download activity.
    Press and hold and keep holding both the left CTRL and Shift keys while you click Tools and then One Step Update. When the message “You will no longer be prompted for registration” appears, click OK.

    I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

    I second @volvogirl 's suggestion about upgrading to the free Quicken 2013 Deluxe offer.

    But, if you want to stay on Q 2009, did you also install all the available 2009 bug fixes?

    When running an old, unsupported Quicken for Windows version you may no longer be able to download bug fixes (patch files) directly from Quicken.

    As I look at the dialog I do not believe this is the "registration" that happens when you run Quicken.
    It is this "registration" that happens when running older versions of Quicken that can be bypassed with the key sequence that @volvogirl gave.

    It looks like you are installing using some kind of "Trial CD" or such that had a "product key".
    Most retail versions of Quicken didn't have such a key, and as such didn't have this problem.

    A product key like this would be checked by contacting a server.  A server that is lone gone.

    As a result I don't believe you can install Quicken 2009 with what you have.  Your best bet would be to install Quicken 2013.

    Tried 2013. Nogo. It sees the old QDF as "saved by a newer version". Also, we have the New Zealand variant of 2009. :-(

    Looks like I need to go back to 2009 and work with it. The Ctrl-Shift key idea does not work with it as it immediately asks for the Product Key. Install file is Quicken_2009.exe. (An exe Zip FIle).

    On loading it asks for NZ or Australia version, then installs.

    OK now that we know that you are using the Reckon version that explains the product key.
    You need to ask about that product on their website.

    The Quicken 2013 suggested above is a US product.  Quicken Inc only has the US and Canadian versions.
    And others have come here trying to convert and have reported the only way to do that is export a QIF file and import that into either the US or Canadian product.
