Split transaction errors

A few weeks ago, I noticed that YEARS of payroll transactions became corrupted. Specifically, payroll transactions were manually entered & then split into multiple different expenses (taxes, health care, professional dues, etc) & accounts (FSA, 401K, banking). Recently, I noticed that years of payroll deposits were shown to have only ONE account... the first account in the split. Years of splits were lost. I was horrified. I could not understand WHY this happened. At the time, I did not see if this same error occurred to other split accounts. HOwever, to fix the payroll split errors, I went to a back up account and painstakingly copied and pasted over 100 payroll transactions. It would have been too cumbersome to re-enter the various splits over 100 times. That said, it was incredibly time consuming to copy & past each individual transaction for more than 100 payroll deposits.
Today, I realize the SAME error has occurred with our mortage payments where trnasactions are split between principal, interest and escrow accounts. This also appears to have occurred with OTHER split transactions.
But it would be foolish to restore an old back up AND then reenter current transactions for the last 2 months since the last effective backup. Additionally, I do not even know how to identify the other corrupt transactions.
PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME 1) WHY this happened 2) HOW to avoid going forward and 3) WILL this ever happen again? I'm almost at the point to throw my hands in the air and scream as I feel like DECADES of my quicken data has been corrupted with no easy way to fix, much less if I have the time/effort/will power to fix.
As I've now read that others had this problem, HOW has quicken LET this happen without properly communicating it to it's customers?
I'm at wits end and do not know how to easily & effectively resolve. HOw do I find other errors?
and what is validate/super validate? I thought my backups were automatic. I'm simply at a loss.

Hello @popeyeswife,
Thank you for reaching out to the Community and telling us about your issue, though I apologize that you are experiencing this.
This is a known issue that our teams continue to investigate. You can contribute to the investigation by navigating to Help > Report a Problem. Please be advised that you won't receive any direct updates on the issue, however, these problem reports are looked at by our development team.In the meantime, our recommendation is to restore a backup that was saved prior to when this issue first started and turn off Cloud Sync to see if that may help. I understand you mentioned not wanting to restore a backup which you are not required to do. However, please be advised that while turning off Cloud Sync will help prevent the issue from reoccurring, it will not restore or fix any previous corruption.
Please follow the instructions provided below to turn off Cloud Sync.
- Navigate to Edit
- Preferences
- Mobile & Web
- Turn Sync OFF
I hope this helps!

Popeyeswife, you have officially joined the masses of us captives being very frustrated with this piece of software. Those of us with decades of data accumulated find it disheartening to be limited to what we can do with OUR data. The Quicken people CLAIM to use a database system which is explicitly hidden from us. I spent decades myself working with several database systems and most have excellent tools available to help us find and fix data problems. I actually export my data to one such excellent system, Microsoft SQL Server, and use their very powerful capabilities to anaylze my financial history, and then go back to TRY to fix the data in Quicken. I have worked with all types of software, both commercial and self-developed for over 50 years, and have never seen any piece of software experience so many problems.
The best overwhelming evidence of the problems is actually within these communities which constantly display the same numerous failures in handling OUR data. I get very weary of the constant response 'We are very sorry you are having this problem". That doesn't cut it.
When I was developing software for banks, among other business types, we had to go beyond tellling the user that SOMETHING went wrong and were required to tell the user EXACTLY WHAT went wrong, so they could fix it. There is no excuse for putting users through these constant failures, such as failed downloads from varioius finncial institutions. The process should evaluate the data and tell us exactly where and what the problem is such as: "Line xxx in the downloaded file contains invalid data in the transaction amount." We always did this with a VALIDATION pass of the incoming data BEFORE any update was done. Or "the record in the transaction table for Account XYZ for date 99/99/9999 has been corrupted". And normally we would actually display the exact invalid data for the user. In software development terms, this is called ERROR HANDLING.
One thing I learned is that when there is a problem, the odds are probably 10000 to 1 that it is due to software and not hardware or data transmission.
The Quicken people have a responsibility to allow us to get OUR data INTO and OUT OF their software. Period. This is precisely why I will not subscribe and pay ongoing charges to a company that holds me hostage.Ó¿Õ¬

Apologies for the delay in my response.
Unfortunately, no, there is no way to copy partial data from one data file to another. This is why we recommend restoring a backup to restore old data, though it is not required. Turning off cloud sync will help prevent the issue from reoccurring, however, it will not repair any damaged data that has already occurred.
We apologize for any inconvenience! Thank you.-Quicken Anja
