PNC connection issues

I’m using Quicken Premier version R51.12 on Windows 10. I’ve recently been working on Quicken accounts for my church. They’ve always entered their transactions manually. I attempted to connect to PNC to download transactions automatically. (I’m using Express Web Connect.) But when I downloaded the transactions, it changed my balances! (I don’t have it set to automatically accept transactions.)

Since I hadn’t anticipated that, I didn’t discover the error for several weeks. Then I had to restore from a backup and re-enter all the transactions for the past several weeks. After that, it worked for awhile. Then I added a new account and had to relink my accounts. It happened again! I found that for some strange reason it’s changing my opening balances. I’ve had this happen three times in the last 3 months. (At least I was prepared the last two times and restored it from a backup immediately.)

I’ve also noticed missing transactions in my downloads.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, is there a solution?

The change in your Opening Balance is a bug caused by using QWeb and/or QMobile. Turn them off and the issue should stop.

Also, many SuperUsers suggest storing the Opening Balance amount in the Memo field of that transaction as a reminder and just in case.

I’ll try that. It’s a great idea to store the amount in the memo. Thank you.

@NotACPA - I appreciate your suggestions. I did put the opening balances in the memo, as you suggested (using a search in All Transactions).

Then I turned off the sync to Quicken Mobile and Web. I did a backup of my file. I tried to re-link my accounts. It still changed them.

I went back to “All Transactions” and changed the opening balances to their original amounts. That corrected some, but not all of the errors. I have no idea what else got changed.

I’m so frustrated that I can’t simply download transactions to my account! I’ve worked with Quicken using other banks for many, many years, and I’ve never had this problem before. I assume it is specific to PNC.

This is more than likely a Quicken initial setup issue and not PNC. I'm assuming this is a checking account and as such, PNC still (the only remaining FREE) offers DC for personal checking accounts. I don't know if a church organization is considered a personal account, but assuming that PNC treats it that way, you should restore from a backup to just prior to when you started the download and use Direct Connect DC, not EWC+.

This should resolve a number of your previous issues and provide a very stable download. I would remind you to add the beginning balance to the register again. You will most likely need to delete a good number of transactions in the download prior to accepting them into the register, but once you have sort the first download, you should find it quite easy.

Putting the opening balance in the memo doesn't preserve it … it just tell you what it should be when Q changes it and you have to fix thinggs.

Leave QWeb ans QMobile off FOREVER … they're what screwing up your OB.

I did leave QWeb and QMobile off.

I realize putting it in the memo didn’t preserve it. As I stated, I used the amounts in the memos to make the necessary changes to correct the opening balances, but that still didn’t correct everything. PNC had changed something else - I have no idea what. But after the download and after I corrected the opening balances some of my account balances on the left-hand side were still off. (And it wasn’t because transactions were auto-accepted; I I have auto accept turned off, because I want to verify them as I add them.)

So again I had to restore my file from my backup.

Thank you! That’s possibly the answer I needed. Unfortunately our PNC charges $15 / month for Direct Connect. I’ll have to get authorization from my church to do that.
