Merrill Account - Cash Reconciliation

I recently opened a Merrill Account. I can download the account investments and updates with no problem however I noticed that the Quicken (for Mac) numbers didn't match the Merrill on line numbers. What I found was an "investment" (Blackrock Liquidity) is counted in Quicken both as an investment and as cash. For whatever reason I cannot update the cash number (transactions is greyed out). Not sure why this happens.

    Hello @Michael Manna,

Thanks for reaching out about your Merrill account.

What you’re seeing with the Blackrock Liquidity fund being counted both as an investment and as cash is pretty common with money market or liquidity funds. Quicken treats these as “cash equivalents,” so their value shows up in both places, which can make it look like the cash balance is higher than it should be. The reason the cash transactions are greyed out is that Quicken updates that cash balance automatically based on the investment transactions. So, you won’t be able to edit those cash transactions directly.

    Here’s what I suggest:

    1. Take a look at your investment register for the BlackRock Liquidity fund and make sure the share count and price match what Merrill shows online.
    2. Double-check you don’t have a separate cash account that might be counting the same money twice.
    3. When reconciling, focus on matching the total account balance (investment plus cash equivalents) in Quicken to what you see on Merrill’s website, rather than trying to separate cash from investment.

If you’re still seeing a difference after that, please let me know, and we can continue troubleshooting.

    Thanks!

Quicken Jasmine, sorry for not responding sooner. I hope the thread is sill open. Yes, I am still seeing the problem. In the On-Line Merrill register the Balances for two Money accounts, Blackrock Liquidity and ML Bank Deposit, are shown separately from the Investments. In Quicken the Blackrock Liquidity portion shows as an Investment with a symbol of BUPXX and a price of "$1". So it is counted in the Investments but due to the download from Merrill it is also counted as Cash also.

I can make a work around by just changing the Blackrock to a "$0" price. That way it will show it will still show as an investment but the amount is part of the cash balance. I would rather not do that. In other investments from different brokerages I can make a notation in transaction when I do a reconciliation. However in this case, because Transactions in quicken in greyed out (I don't know why that is) I can't do a transaction reconcillation.

I figured out how to "un-grey" the transactions. I only needed to check "detail" on the account settings. It's been so long since I added accounts, I forgot that setting. I am going to used my "$0" price workaround so that I can still see the investment but I have noted in my file reason.

I am having the same historical Merrill Lynch sweep account and cash balances both included in my Quicken ML account totals. With all the history did I miss the fix or is still an issue?

    Hello @Michael Manna and @gabes,

Thanks for confirming that you are still experiencing this issue and for joining this thread.

If you don't mind confirming the sections that I previously mentioned first, then we can continue troubleshooting.

    I appreciate it!
