Placeholder transactions being added
I have an account that was opened when I worked at State Street. It has two stocks in it. I made it correct yesterday so that the number of shares for both were correct. Part of this was deleting Placeholder transactions that were duplicates ( roughly duplicates). This morning I open Quicken and update the accounts and I get two Placeholder transactions come back.
In one instance, the name has changed from SS TARGET 2025 to SS TARGET 2025 (OXK5). I have gone through and merged those two names (I thought) last week. This entry has a SYMBOL of OXK5.
The other instance the name is SS S&P 500 INDEX 2. Curiously it does NOT have a symbol at all. The name I have (the original name) is SS S&P 500 INDEX. Last week, the entry that was created was SS S&P 500 INDEX (OXL6). I merged that name with the simpler SS TARGET 2025.
In both cases, I picked the simpler name as the name I want to see.
What is the proper way to deal with these entries so they don't keep coming back?
I think someone needs to admit that this new system from Fidelity is buggy and start fixing the bugs.

Hello @Perry Smith,
Thank you for reaching out. Please be aware that the Community forum is primarily user-to-user based with only a handful of us mods. Therefore, responses are not immediate and can take up to 24 to 48 hours. If you prefer immediate assistance, please contact Quicken Support directly.
Based on your description of the issue, it sounds like the duplicate placeholders were being caused by duplicate securities. Merging the securities should correct the issue. If you still have issues with duplicates of the same security downloading after you've already merged securities, then I'd recommend contacting Quicken Support directly for further assistance, since they have access to tools we can't access on the Community, and they're able to escalate the issue as needed. The Quicken Support phone number can be found through this link here. Phone support is available from 5:00 am PT to 5:00 pm PT, Monday through Friday.
I hope this helps!

@Quicken Kristina I have a speech impediment and so phone calls are difficult for me so I fall back to text based methods even though they are slow and sometimes frustrating. I wish companies would consider people like me in their support methods. To me, the asynchronous nature of emails seems way more efficient than waiting on phone calls.

Have this / similar problem (hard to keep track with so many issues about) with both Fidelity and Vanguard. Have cleaned up the downloaded transactions multiple times, and deleted redundant and/or merged Securities in QMac so that the share count and balance is correct. However, upon next download Fidelity wants to Add Shares again for a subset of my holdings; same for Vanguard, except it wants to Remove Shares, as shown in attached screenshots. I can't seem to update any online account - bank, credit card, etc. - without these placeholder transactions reappearing in investment accounts each time. Please help!

Hello @dhanson,
Thank you for letting us know you're seeing a similar issue. To clarify, are these placeholders to add "new" securities and remove securities that it is no longer seeing in the account? If so, are these securities that you had previously merged, or are these associated with ones where you had previously just deleted the incorrect placeholders/transactions?
I look forward to your response!

Thanks for the prompt response. Hope this clarifies:
For the Add Shares placeholders, I have held those securities for several years, in QMac as FID US BOND IDX, FID TOTAL INTL IDX, and VOYA INTERM BOND 3. Recently, redundant transactions and securities were download with the same pattern for each security above - redundant securities with a 2 suffix and the (SYMBOL) suffix, like FID US BOND IDX 2 and FID US BOND IDX (FXNAX).
In attempting to manually clean up the mess, I deleted the redundant transactions and deleted the suffix 2 securities once there were no transactions, while merging the original FID US BOND IDX and FID US BOND IDX (FXNAX) variations. Followed this same pattern for all 6 securities in the screenshots above.
So from my user perspective, for the Add Shares placeholders it appears QMac is not recognizing the merged securities and is trying to add securities with the symbol suffix FID US BOND IDX (FXNAX) equal to the shares already in the account as FID US BOND IDX.
Meanwhile, in Vanguard acct (bottom screenshot) the FID securities had the same suffix 2 and suffix (SYMBOL) redundancies that I deleted and merged, as above. Now it keeps trying to Remove Shares with the same security names as already held in the account (like FID 500 INDEX), but only for the FID securities in the Vanguard account - the Vanguard securities in that account are not affected.
Thanks for your assistance!

Thank you for your reply,
Since you've already tried merging the problem securities and the duplication/placeholder issue persists, I recommend that you contact Quicken Support directly for further assistance, as they have access to tools we can't access on the Community and they're able to escalate the issue as needed. I'm having the same issue with a few securities. The most recent one is OXLC, which went through a 5:1 reverse split. Quicken keeps resurrecting a placeholder for the original pre-split shares, which isn't needed. When the placeholder is there they balances of the security and value of the account is wrong and I can't simply delete them as they are resurrected every time.
I looked at the security list and details, the merge security button is greyed out.

@dmkahn I just discovered a transaction where shares were added but what should have happened is an entry for a stock split should have been added. I edited the transaction and changed it (rather than delete and add or some other form of alteration) and that seemed to have worked.
You can click on "All Transactions" and then search for "Placeholder" to find the ones that Quicken has added. What would help me is knowing more about when and how Quicken decides to add the entries but currently I don't really have a clue when or why they will be added.

@Perry Smith can't delete, see next comment

@dmkahn (This won't help you but in my case I changed the Add Shares to a Split and in my particular case it was a 6 to 1 split. Making that change worked in the sense that the number of shares was correct both before and after but now I have a valid cost basis for the added shares)
Questions: If you just delete the placeholder entry, does it come back with the next update? In some of my cases, it did not. So… I concluded that that was the right action. 🤷
If the transaction does come back, then perhaps you need to merge the two stocks. But as @Quicken Kristina suggests, you might need to contact support.

@Perry Smith I figured out how to merge the securities in the securities list and picked the correct one to be the successor (the one with the ticker symbol). That seems to have fixed it for the moment. We'll see if it sticks. Thx.
