CC-506 Error with Merrill Lynch Investment Accounts
I have seen other posts regarding CC-506 errors, but nothing about Merrill Lynch Investment accounts and One Step Update (OSU). Ever since Quicken began to convert Merrill Lynch account holders to Express Web Connect + (EWC+), I have routinely experienced this error. I must have called Quicken Support at least eight times to resolve it, and although their prescribed fix worked for that day and the next day, OSU failed again with CC-506. The only temporary fix I found is to deactivate the accounts in a file, close Quicken, and then restart it, and then re-link the accounts between Quicken and Merrill Lynch. It is a pain to keep having to do this.
Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone found a permanent fix to this problem?
Note: On October 14, 2025, my CC-506 problem with escalated to 3rd level technical support, but to date, I have no feedback except that I was told there is no target date for a fix.
Technical info: I am running Quicken Classic Premier on Windows 11 Home. Version R64.35, Build 27.1.64.35

I just got a CC-506 from one of my two instances of Quicken, with both the Merrill Lynch and Merrill Edge accounts returning the same error twice this morning. The other instance of Quicken appears to have connected, but there were no transactions to download so I'm not sure what the result would have been if there were.

Regarding the CC-506 error, it may be caused by a mismatch between the Merrill Lynch accounts that have been defined for Express Web Connect Plus (EWC+) and the actual Merrill Lynch accounts in the Quicken file(s). In my case I have 3 different Quicken files with 9 accounts needing Merrill Lynch (ML) access. I found this out just this week in a phone call I had with Quicken 3rd level technical support.
It was explained to me that in setting up the Merrill Lynch side of the EWC+ connection, I should do this to include all 9 ML accounts regardless of whether they are accounts included in the particular Quicken file or not. The reason being is the ML side of the connection can only work with one set of access definitions regardless of how many Quicken files you have. Basically, this then provides a wide connection to the ML side of the EWC+ connection.
The next thing to do is per file to link just the accounts in that file to with Quicken to EWC+. All of the other ML accounts on the ML side of the connection, should be marked as Do Not Add. Once you set this up, I found that EWC+ works properly.
A few other points to mention:
- Before starting to setup EWC+, be sure to Deactivate each of your ML accounts through Tools > Account List. Be sure that no ML accounts have online access.
- Then for each file that you have with ML accounts, be sure to Add the account's online connection back into the Quicken file and include ALL ML accounts regardless if they are in the particular file or not.
I hope this information helps you.

Hello @WoodCountry & @Ken RS.,
Thank you both for adding to the discussion.
@WoodCountry, I checked your connections internally, and I am not seeing an error being returned for Merrill Lynch.
That being said, CC-506 occurs when Quicken is unable to identify the account in Quicken to which your downloaded information belongs. This could be because the account at your financial institution is closed, or because the account number or nickname was changed on the financial institution's website. This error also occurs if there is an older account still activated in the file that is no longer available at the financial institution.
If you are still receiving this error, please review this Support Article for CC-506 and apply the steps therein. If the steps do not resolve the issue, contact Quicken Support directly so they can investigate this further and process an escalation if needed.
@Ken RS., Thank you so much for sharing what Quicken Support walked you through to resolve this issue. Very much appreciate the update!
Thanks again.

Hello @DonQuick20*,
Thank you for adding to this discussion.
After reviewing your connections internally, I am not seeing any errors returned for Merrill Lynch. If possible, can you provide a screenshots of what you are seeing? If needed, please refer to this Community FAQ for instructions on how to attach a screenshot. Alternatively, you can also drag and drop screenshots to your response if you are not given the option to add attachments.
If it is a CC-506, like the others in this thread, please review this Support Article for CC-506 and apply the steps therein. If the steps do not resolve the issue, contact Quicken Support directly so they can investigate this further and process an escalation if needed.
- You could also try the steps @Ken RS. shared, as this is what fixed the issue for them.
Let em know what you find.
