Quicken Classic Premier Issues, Windows Version R65.29

I didn't do much in Quicken between Thanksgiving and Christmas due to the holidays, travel and illness. After Christmas I entered 30-40 transactions and backed up the file. A couple of days later all of the 30-40 transactions I'd previously entered were gone! Checked all accounts. Only have one file. Just gone. So I re-entered those transactions and a bunch more over the last week or so. But Quicken is behaving erratically. Sometimes a transactions won't post. Sometimes it asks me if I want to create a category that is already created. Sometimes data is replaced with N/A and I get a message saying that the transaction is corrupt and to delete it and re-enter it. I'm tired of re-entering. It's a big enough pain to get transactions entered the first time without having to re-do some or all of them! This wasn't happening before Thanksgiving. What has happened since Thanksgiving? I've been using Quicken since 1997 and have never experienced so much difficulty with it! I don't like this subscription model at all! It seems to create more issues than help.

Something is altering your entries. Do you have Mobile & Web enabled?

Mobile & Web sync was enabled until I lost the 40 transactions. ChatGPT suggested that I turn that off and I did. But the application is still acting quirky. Freezing, acting like it is "sleeping", needs to be closed and re-opened every hour or so. And sometimes the computer has to be rebooted.

What is the Windows Explorer path to where your data file is saved?

Is Quicken installed on your local drive?

The Quicken data file and all of my backups are on an external hard drive. And have been for years.

If the external hard drive is directly connected to the computer then I don't think that should be an issue but I can't say for sure without getting answers to the questions I asked.

My apologies! I thought I had responded to your questions but I did misread the second question.

Yes, Quicken is installed on my internal hard drive.

The path to the data file on my external hard drive is D:/Quicken Backups/QData2003.

Is that what you are looking for?

I'm going to try to uninstall and reinstall Quicken. I've never done this before so it makes me very nervous. Things never go as they are supposed to when I do things myself! But I keep losing entries that act as if they are posting but aren't there when I go back to follow up.

The path to the data file on my external hard drive is D:/Quicken Backups/QData2003

I would hold off on uninstalling and reinstalling the software for now. Reinstalling the software might set up a new location for saving and running Quicken files that might make it more difficult to find out what is happening.

Whether the data files are on C or on D should make no difference because the computer will view both as internal drives.

The reason why I wanted to see the path is because the default path for Quicken is C:\Users<YourUsername>\Documents\Quicken. One can of course set up their own custom folder and path which in itself is not really an issue. But for some people there is "OneDrive" inserted into that path which means that the data file is being saved in a folder that shares that file with the OneDrive Cloud Storage site and those 2 files are continuously syncing with each other. This is known to be a problem for Quicken performance and can cause permanent data loss…not just with OneDrive but with any Cloud Storage site. It's OK to save back-up file in these Cloud sites but the primary data file should not be saved there nor be syncing with it. But, this does not appear to be the issue for you since the path does not include a Cloud Storage site.

I might be wrong but I suspect that what is happening is that your data files are saving but when you reopen Quicken you are actually opening not the last saved file but are opening a different one, perhaps even a backup file, that has not had any of the updates saved in it because it is not the same file that you last saved.

You might want to go to File > Find Quicken Files. This will search your drive for all primary Quicken data files and backup files. It will automatically start to search your C drive by default. Let it complete (it might take a couple of minutes) and then make note of the location(s) of any data files that are found. Then repeat the search but this time change the drive to D.

If you find Quicken data files in multiple locations you should open those folders and see what the dates are for those files. When you find a file that has the date of your prior session, open it to see if the entries you made are present there.

Let me know what you find out.

Well, I had already uninstalled and reinstalled Quicken before I saw your suggestion to wait! (As I predicted, it did not go smoothly but I did finally get it done). Initially, some quirks were still present - typing an entry but Quicken wouldn't let post. Other transactions that appeared to be posting but weren't there when I looked a few minutes later. All within the same data file. But after closing Quicken and rebooting my computer - again - it seems to be behaving normally. At least for now. I've managed to get all of my transactions entered and account reconciled. And it is backed up! At least I see the file with the correct date/time stamp.

To your comments about the data files, you are probably correct. A few days ago, I was opening several back up files to try to find the original missing 40 transactions and most likely didn't get back to the QData2003 file. Lesson learned about opening back up files!

I hope this is the end of my troubles for a while. Maybe I'll be able to go another 29 years without any significant issues like this one!

Thank you very much for your assistance! Have a blessed day.

Spoke too soon! What does this error message mean:

Write failed. So not flushing the data to the file.

I've never seen that error message before but you might find this post thread to be of help:

I hope it resolves the issue for you.
