Why is connecting to RBC Royal Bank (Mac Classic) so broken?

This problem is longstanding - downloading transactions from RBC Royal Bank is a huge pain in the neck. I don’t have any similar problems with any other financial institution.

  • I have 2FA enabled on my RBC Royal Bank account. Turning this off is unacceptably dangerous due the obvious security risks.
  • I have the RBC mobile app on my iPhone and use this for authentication
  • When i update my RBC accounts from Quicken, here is what happens:
  • I get a notification on my RBC mobile app asking me to approve the login
  • I approve, but get an error from the mobile app that the request has timed out
  • I get a popup window in Quicken asking how i want to authenticate to RBC
  • I select the mobile app
  • I get another notification on the mobile app, and approve it
  • I get another popup window in Quicken with an option to select “Done"
  • I select Done and OK, and the transactions finally download

Note that if I opt to skip the connection, RBC locks my account, and I have to go through a process to unlock it!

This is nuts.

Has anyone else run into this, and is there a way to streamline the process? One thing i just noticed is that when i go to “Manage authorized applications” in my RBC account, nothing is listed…

    Thank you for sharing your experience. I can understand your frustration, as the process you have described seems less than ideal.

    Just to clarify, you are seeing this in Quicken for Mac, correct?

    MFA requirements come directly from the financial institution. Preferences for these can be changed through the bank's website.

    It does seem strange that Quicken isn't showing up under authorized applications as well. I think it would be a good idea to give the bank a call and see if they can help update your MFA preferences and figure out why they aren't showing Quicken linked to your accounts.
